Zep III - gotta love it. This could well be Zep's high tide mark. Absolute mastery of their trade. Great Songs throughout. Light and shade. It ticks all the boxes. Probably my favourite. Only problem? There's a lot of other folk out there that like it too. Net result - prices are HIGH$$$ for a great true 1st press. So, someone on a budget needs to think outside the box, a little, and compromise too. So, what about the very 1st green and orange copy from Q1 1972 - which essentially has the same audio output as a red & plum? Now, that's worth thinking about...Both sides mention the original catalogue number pre-Kinney [2401002] - matrix suffix A5/B6. Exactly the same audio....and pressed heavy like a 1971 copy.
Zep III hit the shelves in October 1970 and the earliest copies were pressed heavy with GRANT credits and a A5/B5 matrix. But the next iteration usually drops the Grant credit and they soon shift to an A5/B6 cut. But here's the eureka moment... so does this Q1 1972 copy! So, if you want a decent early copy - and good value - these copies are definitely worth a look at. The one we have, here, is housed in an original 1st issue cover by E J Day. But the give away that it dates from right toward the end of the red & plum run - the sticker inside mentioning Kinney's re-cataloguing at Xmas-1971. So, the cover is actually precisely the same as a 1st issue form Xmas 1970. That means it is Deluxe and heavy-card has been employed. The spinning wheel is in excellent order - fully functioning. The vinyl comes housed in an original poly-lined early 70's 'plastic bag warning inner sleeve. So, we're 100% genuine and 100% complete
Vinyl (Ex) In lovely condition and has only seen relatively light use. Under close inspection there are a couple of light marks per side, one slight trail early on side 2 - nothing heavy or troublesome though. A thorough testing from beginning to end reveals an, at least, EXCELLENT level of playback with one deviation. Intros and inbetweens are lovely and quiet and the audio comes across with superb clarity. Later copies often don't quite seem to have the dynamics to carry off Zep from this period. On this copy you'll get the full gamut. The audio quality is superb - throughout... it basically sounds just like a red and plum copy to my ears. A beautifully quiet back ground too. Even those fussy tracks like SIBLY play truly excellent and clean. A few crackles in, perhaps, one brief isolated moment per side. The only deviation is early in Gallows - a coupe of minor ticks and ONE click. Weigh it up in the round - I'd argue this is a bit of a steal given how you're getting red & plum audio under the radar.
Cover (Ex-) Front and back look pretty clean with just some evidence of ageing at the extremities. The spinning wheel is fully operational. A couple of laminate crease lines on the rear - very common and occurred during the printing phase. The interior looks great - no noticeable issues. There's only light edge wear in places - nothing noticeable. The spine looks very nice with just laminate creasing. Overall the cover retains excellent rigidity in part thanks to the heavy card employed in manufacture. Sweet!
