Description
Here we have Lee Morgan’s classic The Cooker, Blue Note 1578, an all-original mono copy of a great Nov. 29, 1957, Rudy Van Gelder-engineered that featured a dynamite band: Morgan, trumpet; Pepper Adams, baritone saxophone; Bobby Timmons, piano; Paul Chambers, bass; and Philly Joe Jones, drums. The playing is supercharged throughout, with Morgan and Adams offering electrifying work and the rhythm section on fire. The session offers such gems as A Night in Tunisia; the rollicking Just One of Those Things; and a poignant Lover Man. A magnificent artifact of jazz history.

The record has been cleaned on a VPI Record cleaner and is graded after being played and visually inspected as follows:
Vinyl: VG++++/M- with a MAJOR EXCEPTION, see below:
Except for a very few, quiet ticks at the very beginning of Just One of Those Things, this record plays M-: exceedingly quiet with only very occasional, very light surface crackle next to inaudible.
Vinyl still has considerable sheen, labels are tight and white, though cleaning fluid has caused a slight at one spot.
As with any Van Gelder-engineered session, this record has outstanding audio qualities, with a crisp, live, ‘You Are There’ sense to the proceedings.
MAJOR EXCEPTION, PLEASE NOTE:
At the very end of Philly Joe’s solo on New Ma, at the end of Side 2, about 30 seconds from the run-off, the record sticks, that is to say, it repeats over and over. This seems to be caused by a pressing flaw that was also scratched at one point.
In all, the LP plays essentially M- for 95% of playing time, then G- at the very end.
Cover: VG+: Some ring wear and scuffing on the spine, top and bottom, with a slight 2” tear at the top left. Otherwise, the front still has reasonable sheen and the back is more than decent. Not a pristine cover but a very good one, so the rating.
This is an original copy of BN 1578. Labels: both sides have a deep groove with labels that are bright and clean without marks except as noted. The printed address is the West 63rd, NYC, no Inc. in Blue Note name. There is a Plastylite ‘p’ or ‘ear’ in dead wax, along with Rudy Van Gelder’s stamped intitals. The rear cover address is 47 West 63rd, New York 10023. (All aspects of cover notation and LP markings are stated as being original by Fred Cohen, in his landmark book on Blue Note original pressings, “Blue Note Records: A Guide to Identifying Original Pressings –Jazz Record Center Books.)
