BEAUTIFUL MINTY CLEAN  1964 British Invasion beatrock classic containing the timeless hits 'She's Not There' and "Tell Her No" which some 45 years later almost every listener still digs ...

Aside from the Beatles and perhaps the Beach Boys, no mid-'60s rock group wrote melodies as gorgeous as those of the Zombies. Dominated by Colin Blunstone's breathy vocals, choral backup harmonies, and Rod Argent's shining jazz- and classical-influenced organ and piano, the band sounded utterly unique for their era. Indeed, their material -- penned by either Argent or guitarist Chris White, with unexpected shifts from major to minor keys -- was perhaps too adventurous for the singles market. To this day, they're known primarily for their three big hit singles, "She's Not There" (1964), "Tell Her No," (1965), and "Time of the Season" (1969). Most listeners remain unaware that the group maintained a remarkably high quality of work for several years. In 1964, they released their first album as a follow-up to their hit single "She's Not There." The record is a perfect showcase of the Zombies' unique early style combining R&B, & beat with a sophisticated hint of Beatles edge. Every track here is a winner. In terms of performing style, compared to The Beatles, one can make a direct comparison when considering 'You Really Got A Hold On Me', which of course, The Beatles also performed and recorded. The Zombies reveal themselves to have, arguably, a better singer in their ranks than the entire Beatles. The Beatles version of this tune is pretty great too, but many prefer this version.Also superior is The Zombies version of 'Summertime' that's here, Colin gives a smokey, hazy and sunny performance, where the sunshine lazily fades into view through the clouds. Of the remaining originals on 'The Zombies', 'Woman' is fairly undistinguished Eric Burdon & The Animals like rhythm and blues fare, 'I Don't Want To Know' is demonstrating the way The Zombies could pen a strong chorus and 'I Remember When I Loved Her' is simply lovely and gorgeous. Oh, and 'She's Not There' is of course fantastic. Overall, 'The Zombies' could have been so much better. The singles The Zombies released in the immediate aftermath were cool songs and better than the some of the songs this record contains. The Zombies, like many groups that weren't The Beatles, didn't have enough power, freedom or confidence though to do anything else, it seems.
