THAT'S THE SAME THING
Poke around for records in Dallas and eventually one of these mega-rare records from the Masqueraders was bound to turn up. Though many think of them as a Detroit group, they got their start right here in Dallas, back in the late '50s.
This particular platter on Soul Town is their rarest of all, and one of the most desirable Northern Soul records ever pressed. The song "That's The Same Thing" was featured on the northern soul compilation 'For Millionaires Only, Vol. 3.'
At the time, they were still based in Dallas, playing local gigs and parties, trying to catch a break. It was Alvin Howard, a local Dallas entrepreneur who recorded them for his new label, Soultown. Unfortunately, he inadvertently mis-spelled on the label as the Masquaders, leaving out the middle letters 'ER'. Both sides of the 45 featured original tunes with the tight harmonies the Masqueraders were known for. It really shows off that they were listening to a lot of the Impressions at the time, as the flipside "Talk About A Woman" very nearly sounds like it's a Curtis Mayfield tune.
When this record failed to sell many copies in 1966, the group packed up and moved to Detroit. That's just the start of a long climb to their first hit single in 1968 for Bell Records.
I don't have to tell you how infrequent it is for one of these original singles to turn up. Get this one while you can!
