Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and highly attractive. Any spindle marks are few, mostly light and faint as mostly seen under angled light. The cover has a some wear, but this very first issue record has little and plays great.

Cat Number: EKS 74042.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 132 grams. A very good solid weight for any record.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Rare: make no mistake. First UK pressings of this album are highly elusive, and for those that do surface, most are seen trashed. Especially in the UK, few (bar the more adventuous) shelled out on new unknown more underground American acts. Younger listeners who did usually played them heavily on very basic record players, hence the very poor conditions these classics are more often seen in. Relatively common records are far easier to find in top conditions, but the genuine poor-selling rarities are a far different story.

Brief Info: One of the most powerful debut albums ever recorded and it was a live album. It fully encaptures the essence of this very loud rock album. Recorded in Detroit at the Grande Ballroom over two nights for Devil’s Night and Halloween 1968. It sold fairly well in America but less so elsewhere making originals elusive and very hard to find in any condition, let alone better ones. The name is a shortened version of Motor City Five. The title song originally included the ‘MF’ expletive, that in those days carried far more clout than it does now, but Elektra were not going to accept it, and it was changed to ‘Brothers and Sisters’ against the band’s wishes. It led to a split from Elektra, the second album ‘Back in the USA’ was issued on Atlantic (this also on sale). Ironically, Jefferson Airplane released their ‘Volunteers’ album later in 1969 that did include the same ‘MF’ expletive, although RCA were nervous and wanted it cut, it was allowed to be released uncensored. A few ‘Kick Out the Jams’ in America were sold uncensored on cover and record ‘under-the-counter’, but are very rare and seldom seen or offered. This UK original cover DOES INCLUDE the ‘F’ and ‘MF’ expletives, but not on audio – I do not think the British version ever did, so the cover at least goes part-way to offering the full deal. A debut that proved to be the band’s definitive recording, massively loud, raw, energetic and powerful, it is regarded as one of the greatest live albums ever made by many. Quite similar to The Stooges fronted by Iggy Pop, this album takes no prisoners and the music simply fizzes from the speakers. They went on to make two more albums, but those never matched the raw power of this blistering set. In the UK, this album can be almost considered a ‘lost’ classic, those that do show up are normally on the 1970s Butterfly label, orange Elektras were made only in small numbers and sold even less. One of the pioneering protopunk albums which is admired by many artists with it’s influence carrying on into the later part of the 1970s with the rise of punk-rock. Sadly, two of their members died relatively young: Tyner in late 1991 and Smith (who later married Patti Smith) both passed away in their mid-40s. This legendary live debut album is a groundbreaking legacy to this revolutionary political band.

Cover Grade and Format: VERY GOOD: an unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces. This DOES include the sensitive words mentioned above inside the gatefold – I decided not to highlight these – but with the new Ebay magnifier, they can be clearly seen. Manufactured in England by Polydor. This a dedicated mono cover, these had stereo stickers placed over the EKL prefix, but here is has gone.

Cover Front: Overall, this cover has some wear, but being honest if items like this were not offered a little ‘down’, they would rarely, if ever be seen at all. Based on logic and percentages, the tiny selling, vintage albums with non-laminated surfaces are going to be massively difficult to locate in top condition compared to the big selling titles. So even with some wear, mainly to the edges, I have no qualms whatsoever in offering this highly elusive classic.

The front looks impressive: The only issue of real note apart from some rubbing near the very edge of the edges, is a small piece of clear tape on the spine edge near the top. This only quite small and showing little, however a small piece has been removed and pulled, the surface likely enhanced but this again shows little and being extremely well done by an owner from the past. As I hope my picture shows, this front is still impressive and clean with little else to fault on this famous graphic. Minimal traces of rubbing away from the very edges and hardly any creasing. Being honest, this will prove hard to find much better as this is prone to just about all forms of issues.

Cover Back: The back is largely the same with a similar tape issue, but even smaller. The stereo sticker has also gone, leaving a faint outline trace and a small pull that has been reapplied, this all near the top right corner. So a small tear repair is lightly evident. Being situtated where it is, this has far less relevance to the important artwork areas of this back and my eye is hardly even drawn to it. Many collectors even think a little wear or minor damage actually enhances these very old covers giving a true sense of feeling of owning the genuine article. Anyway, some very edge, edge and corner tip rubbing, but the main graphic again impressive. A trace of rim rubbing near the top but the lack of heavy deep ringwear is a massive bonus on this. As is the lack of creasing. The UK version used updated American printing plates which blackened out some credits on the titles. Although both front and back are not perfect, both sides still look impressive and very little detract from the visual enjoyment.

Cover Inner Gatefold: This controversial centrefold has NOT been censored and includes the still taboo expletives that were deemed far more offensive back in the 1960s than they do these days. As stated above, this cover has been adapted from the original American printing plates with black bars covering credits or American information not relevant to the UK version, this on the back. But these words, that were censored in the United States are left FULLY intact inside. This centrefold has little to fault bar a small four letter name near the top left corner which is neat.

Top Edges: Solid, straight and unsplit, but with moderate consistent surface rubbing.

Bottom Edges: As above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: These are quite sharp with little wear. Any thickening or burring little and light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on the back edge, both guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with minimal compression and folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. There is some patchy rubbing with some text eroded, under a magnifier, around 50 per cent remains, possibly a little more.

Corners: All corners have rubbing the same as their respective edges – that is say moderate. Fair to fine shape largely retained.

Cover Summary: A highly respectable example of this very fragile late 1960s cover, one that could prove difficult to find much better. With most of any wear on the top and bottom edges and corners (and to a lesser extent, the spine), this has survived the years quite well all considered. Those few who shelled-out on this record, ever fewer would have cover-protected them. In fact many such albums were loaned out, written on and basically treated harshly. The main large areas are still impressive with most issues small, it gives relatively mild clues on it’s genre and era, and I for one have no qualms with that. If you want these classics pristine, the modern reissues are an option, but nothing beats owning the real thing, and this will not be seen often. This rarer uncensored UK original should please many collectors, but clearly the purists will have to wait for the near impossible - good luck with that.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(–): a plain white Polydor style inner with ‘Patent Application No. 40904/61’ number printed on one side. Two crisp neat window circles and clear lining. Some crinkle near the top edge opening and two corner creases. These appear deliberate, many collectors did this to stop the record sliding out. All edges are unsplit with no repairs, a few small toning spots also, but generally quite clean overall.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: or very close to. This has mainly light surface marks, but it plays very cleanly, even the quiet spoken parts. A very fine visual copy that is clean with fine shine and very solidly pressed. A copy played a few times, but no penetrating scratches at all most of the marks are quite fine as seen more critically under bright angled light. So visually quite impressive, this being a very early issue as well with the textured label surfaces, a lovely rare record that should please many collectors, but not quite for the visual purists who only want perfection at any cost – again, good luck with that on such albums.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: Owning true originals of these somewhat ‘lost’ UK-pressed American classics is always special. This pioneering, even groundbreaking protopunk album plays even above it’s visual grading with very little to fault. Forget any minor visual blemishes, this album fizzes! Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. This is a sonically powerful live recording that really captures the band’s raw real sound. They never really quite matched it again in the studio and this stands almost as a classic one-off. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean and tough pressing. Even the spoken parts are clean with very little unwanted and few true originals will outperform this UK issue significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, visually it will give gentle clues to vintage, but get this on to your deck and be blown away with one of the most energetic and loud sets put to vinyl. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record, any minor blemishes would be lost in the volume and I noticed little anyway. A brilliant full-on album, this packs a real punch, this genuine rare album will prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended – “KICK OUT THE JAMS BROTHERS & SISTERS”!!!

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
