SUMMERTIME / APRIL IN PARIS ... 7-inch, 45rpm single by MEMPHIS & THE FOUR BOYS-MEN. Original Italian pressing on the ARLECCHINO label (D 310), from circa mid '60s. Super-obscure and practically unknown vocal jazz grail from Italy. For us, a record we have only ever seen (and sold well) once before. Both sides are superb examples of the genre. Features unusual, femme fatale lead vocals (sung in broken English) over modern jazz rhythms. Brilliant renditions of Gershwin's SUMMERTIME and APRIL IN PARIS theme with beautiful, sultry and seductive vocals / wordless scat by a mysterious singer. Shades of the Helen Merrill / Lilian Terry / Maria Moris cum '50s American cheese cake / sex kitten sound, but with an obvious Italian twist. The equally mysterious quartet play wonderfully moody jazz with cool double-bass figures / stylish piano solos / drums and splashes of psychedelic mod hammond. Powerful and atmospheric, especially the moving version of SUMMERTIME. The APRIL IN PARIS side has a more classic American '50s vocal sound. Tres chic and effortlessly hip. Big record with the few Japanese collectors who know it ;) Never comes up for sale. Same cult label as I Trippers Oh Baby / Corruzione X008 Italian garage single. Mid-century design / futuristic / modernist influenced artwork sleeve too. Very rare 45!!!
Our record grading: SEALED / M- / VG++ / VG+ / VG
Vinyl is in shiny, VG+ condition overall with hairlines and faint scuffs. Surface noises. Some soft pops / ticks (as you can hear on the soundclip) but mosty to the 'April In Paris' side. The delicate / fragile thin picture sleeve is in strong VG+ condition overall with general wear (mostly creasing from storage). A few tiny tears to open side. Corner and edge wear. Some stains to top seam area of back sleeve. Very rare 45!!!
