Super Session is an album that grew out of nine hours of studio jamming in 1968 by guitarists Stephen Stills and Mike Bloomfield and multi-instrumentalist Al Kooper. Kooper and Bloomfield had both previously worked in support of Bob Dylan in concert and appearing on his ground-breaking classic Highway 61 Revisited.
Kooper, fresh from having assembled and recorded the inaugural incarnation of Blood, Sweat & Tears, booked two days of studio time with Bloomfield in May 1968 in Los Angeles.
They recruited keyboardist Barry Goldberg and bassist Harvey Brooks, both members of the band that Bloomfield was in the process of leaving, Electric Flag, and well-known session drummer "Fast" Eddie Hoh.
On the first day the quintet recorded the first side of the album, the next day, Bloomfield, who was a heroin addict, abruptly disappeared after suffering an attack of what was euphemistically referred to as "chronic insomnia." Kooper hastily called on Stephen Stills to sit in for Bloomfield on what would become the second side of the album, including a lengthy cover version of Donovan's "Season of the Witch."

LABELS: The labels are clean, bright, fresh and unmarked with light/moderate spindle traces (which show readily on these untreated rough textured labels) - this copy has been played but not over-played and it's also been extremely well cared for
VINYL Visual: Both surfaces retain their original deep, glossy sheen and have a beautiful lustre. On close inspection under a bright light there are some light and superficial scuff marks evident (actually these look more like pressing blemishes) - these have no audio consequence - the LP sounds great
VINYL Audio: Sensational audio delivery - crystal clear, warm, rich and detailed sound and on playback at a loud volume (which is how I always listen to my LPs prior to listing and it was a great pleasure to return to this one as I'd forgotten just how darn good it is) there are no scratches, no sticks or jumps, no clicks or pops and barely any surface noise - just a touch on the run-ins and between some of the tracks but never during the music itself. This is a sensational copy and the whole LP plays with superb clarity, no discernible groove-wear and no distortion and is strictly graded a very strong EXCELLENT to (+) for audio (because of the light surface mentioned - which is really not a problem at all) - this is a fantastic copy which sounds great and plays pretty much perfectly from start to finish - great stuff
SLEEVE: The original EJ DAY "Patents Pending" sleeve is also in EXCELLENT to (+) condition. The front laminate has a beautiful deep glossy sheen and the unlaminated back is remarkably clean and fresh. There whole sleeve is crisp and sharp and the (very thin) spine displays all text clear and bold. Lovely example of this original sleeve
