BLUE HAZE FANTASY RECORDS OJC-093 1984 ISSUE - This potpourri of Davis-led small combos is an indicator of the kind of important playing he was doing in the years leading up to his famous "comeback" in 1955. But if the majority of the critics were asleep on Miles, the musicians were not. These recordings went a long way toward entrenching him as an influence. The pianists are John Lewis, Horace Silver and, on his own composition "Smooch," Charles Mingus. The drummers are the trinity of bebop: Max Roach, Art Blakey and Kenny Clarke; the bassist throughout is Percy Heath; and on "I'll Remember April," the alto saxophonist is Davey Schildkraut, once mistaken for Charlie Parker by Mingus in a "Blindfold Test."

Undeniably one of the best small bands in the history of jazz, the Miles Davis quintet of the mid-1950s made history at the Cafe Bohemia on Manhattan's Barrow Street and in the New Jersey studio of Rudy Van Gelder for Prestige. This is the 3rd in a series of four LPs taped in two marathon studio sessions, done in the style of sets at the Bohemia, producing music of high energy and immediacy. This is a mix of standards and originals, up-tempos and ballads, and a trio number, "Ahmad's Blues." Miles is the sole survivor of this quintet but the music made in the mid-50's period will live forever. The excitement of the emerging John Coltrane; the informed, melodic swing of Red Garland; the tremendous snap and pop of the rhythm trio of Garland, Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones, and Miles' poignancy and intense swing. Miles Davis greatest hits COLUMBIA RECORDS PC-9808 -  pioneered (at least) five entirely different periods/styles of jazz during his career. He was on the cutting edge of be-bop, playing with Charlie Parker. He was literally present a the birth of cool jazz, had an amazing series of records in the 50's, produced several cutting edge big band works with Gil Evans (Sketches of Spain being the most famous), had a second great band in the early 60's, and was again present at the birth of jazz-rock fusion.

No one albumn has ever attempted to be a "greatest Hits" covering this entire spectrum. And this is no exception. Rather, it is focused narrowly on the pre-electric, post Kind of Blue, period from the mid-50's to the early, pre-electric 60's.

While it is impossible to consider this albumn a real "greatest hits" package, as it completely ignores most of Miles' great hits, it is a wonderful, accessible introduction to what many would consider the most productive 15 years in the middle of Miles' long career.

ROUND ABOUT MIDNIGHT - DIGITALLY REMASTERED DIRECTLY FROM ORIGINAL ANALOG TAPES - COLUMBIA RECORDS CJ 40610 -  'Round About Midnight was the first recording with Davis's new quintet, composed of Philly Joe Jones on drums, Paul Chambers on bass, Red Garland on piano, and a young John Coltrane on tenor sax. 

In 1955, Miles Davis signed with jazz powerhouse Columbia Records and immediately began recording 'Round About Midnight. Although he was still under contract with Prestige Records, an agreement stipulated that he could record material for Columbia, to be released after the expiration of his contract with Prestige. 

'Round About Midnight was the first recording with Davis's new quintet, composed of Philly Joe Jones on drums, Paul Chambers on bass, Red Garland on piano, and a young John Coltrane on tenor sax. Featuring standards like Bye Bye Blackbird and the title track 'Round Midnight, this record is considered by some to be one of the pinnacles of the hard bop era. 

Historically, few jazz records claim the significance boasted by ‘Round About Midnight. The album’s creation—and the assembly of Davis’ quintet—stems from the headliner’s rousing rendition of the title-inspired track, “’Round Midnight,” a Thelonious Monk standard, at the 1955 Newport Jazz Festival. Stunning the audience with an interpretation that witnessed him personalize the composition with a brooding tone made possible via employment of his soon-to-be-trademark Harmon mute, Davis redefined perspective and possibility, taking ownership of the ballad as his own, and further improving upon its reach in the studio. It wasn’t the composer’s only surprise. 

'Round About Midnight thrives due to diversity and consistency, a rare combination epitomized by the first-rate selection and astonishing performance of pensive ballads, bebop classics, pop standards, and folk pieces. Witness the counterpoint exchanges during “Ah-Leu-Cha” and its Dixieland shades. Soak up the progressive drama and swinging tempos on “All of You” and “Bye Bye Blackbird.” Delight in the mélange of latticed textures and schematic moods throughout the sequence. 

For a seasoned veteran or a jazz newcomer, this record represents the origins of post-bop modern jazz and is an absolute necessity for any vinyl collection.

MILES DAVIS & JOHN COLTRANE - DIGITALLY REMASTERED DIRECTLY FROM ORIGINAL ANALOG TAPES - COLUMBIA RECORDS CJ 44052 - "This album is a MUST for any jazz library." I'll back that, and would even call it one of the great live jazz albums ever.

Not much of Miles rises for me to the level of appeal of post-bop. I don't warm to the Miles of the muted trumpet who's fond of savouring the notes, fixated on sonic textures. I'm more partial to not-so-cool, more boisterous, racier interplays and improvisation of small-combo hard-bop jazz from the mid-50s to the early 60s - the most exciting period in jazz, to me. No accident, then, that 'Trane was my big draw to this recording.

But what a find this is! The first five tracks (Ah-leu-cha; Straight, No Chaser; Fran-Dance; Two Bass Hit; Bye Bye Blackbird) are stereo recordings from a 4 July '58 show in Newport, RI. The last two (Budo; Little Melonae) are in mono, and hark to a 27 October '55, New York performance. The first set has Bill Evans doing his modal thing, along with Paul Chambers, Jimmy Cobb, Cannoball Adderley on alto sax, and Trane on tenor. The last two tracks have Red Garland on piano, not Evans, Philly Joe Jones not Cobb on drums, and there's no Cannonball adding oomph.

There's plenty of raucous hard-bop on this, plus a share of what I regard as the milder Miles - though of a very high order. On the closing 'Budo,' the mute doesn't stymie the music's pulse one bit: both 'Fran-Dance' and 'Bye Bye Blackbird' have lots to recommend them. And when the mute comes off for the other numbers, Miles sets the trumpet's talents on the wild side, and with his musical mates shows he can bop with the very best. Evans's unusual addition to the mix is also worth a close look; Coltrane's pretty much on fire here too, and as for rhythmic core Miles never got much better than Mr PC, Philly Joe and Cobb.
