Review of the show by Ralph J Gleason in the SF Chronicle “It is the rare artist whose non-conformist, pioneering work manages to coincide with sufficient public acceptance to make him highly commercial,” Gleason wrote on March 6, 1960. “Picasso is one; Miles Davis, the trumpet player who starred Friday night at the concert at the Civic Auditorium, is another. … Davis was in first rare form, playing with such strength, wit and imagination that his lighter moments positively danced and his somber solos were imbued with tragic overtones of classic proportions.”
