Mirage

Now You See It

Compendium Records Fidardo9 12" 33rpm LP 1977 (UK)

Mirage comprised electric guitarist Brian Godding, electric bassist Steve Cook and saxophonist George Khan (all Westbrook bandmembers at various points in the 1970s and 1980s) and drummer Dave Sheen (who also played with Dick Crouch’s Paz). The music is a viscerally affecting, raw-boned brand of jazz-rock, sparked by basic, catchy riffs.

Built around the contrasting work of Godding’s sophisticated filigree guitar work and George Khan’s muscular, straightforward tenor playing, the band was also blessed with a great rhythm section in Dave Sheen and Steve Cook. Ranging from the jazz ballad to avant-garde rock, Mirage was chiefly an improvising band based in north London. The music on ‘Now You See It’ is nevertheless mostly composed, and it still comes across as powerful, moving and original, thirty-some-odd years on. Featuring Khan’s throaty tenor, the catchy melody of ‘King’s Heads’ gives ample room for improvisation, mostly by Khan on this track.

Recorded on a pig farm in Tring, Hertfordshire on Yes’s mobile 24 track studio and if you listen intently you may hear the occasional grunt now and again!
