redgarnett Store ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This handsome LP from Columbia Masterworks (ML 5154, US pressing, gray 6eye label, mono – no stereo edition exists) features conductor Dmitri Mitropoulos and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra in high-octane renditions of four symphonic poems by composer Camille Saint-Saëns, all vividly recorded at Columbia 30th Street Studio, New York (see dates below).
The exact contents are as follows:
Danse Macabre Op. 40
(rec. 27 November 1950)
Le rouet d’Omphale Op. 31
(rec. 23 January 1950)
Phaëton Op. 39
(rec. 9 January 1956)
La jeunesse d’Hercule Op. 50
(rec. 9 January 1956)
There is a dynamism and exoticism here that is as thrilling as it is alluring, Mitropoulos galvanizing the New Yorkers into playing of tremendous poetry and panache – truly outstanding!
Incidentally, the remarkable cover art was executed by L& M Auerbach. There are authoritative liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket by Charles Burr, provided in English only.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is EXCELLENT. There is minor corner wear and discoloration, but that is all. There are no seamsplits, bends, owners’ markings, or other defects, and the album remains solid, bright, glossy, and highly attractive – overall, an excellent collector’s copy.
The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT. Though the surfaces are not perfectly silent (and thus I have rated it NM vs. MINT) this is a fine copy and playback is superb. If you must have perfect surfaces, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, this rates as a NM collector's copy.
