redgarnett Store ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This rare and handsome LP – a fine collector's copy – from Columbia Masterworks (ML 4827, US pressing, blue label, mono – no stereo edition exists) features conductor Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra in a resplendent account of Brahms’s Symphony No. 2 in D Major Op. 73, sumptuously recorded in the rich acoustics of the Academy of Music, Phiadelphia, on 15 February 1953.
Ormandy was not readily associated with the autro-German repertoire and yet if one really listens to his Brahms, Beethoven, Haydn, and Mozart recordings one finds the same dynamism, noble musical profile, and questing intelligence that informed all this great conductor’s interpretations. This Brahms Second is deeply felt, beautifully burnished, and yet also imbued with tremendous sweep and energy – like so much of Ormandy’s discography, it deserves to be far better known.
There are authoritative liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket by Charles Burr, printed in English only. The lovely cover art is credited to Gray Fox.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is near-MINT. There is light corner wear and mild aging, but that is all. There are also no bends, owners’ markings, or other defects, and the whole remains solid, bright, and highly attractive – overall, an outstanding collector's copy.
The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT. Though the surfaces are not perfectly silent (and thus I have rated it NM vs. MINT) this is a fine copy and playback is superb. If you must have perfect surfaces, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, this rates as a NM collector's copy.
