LA PRIMA NOTTE DI QUIETE

Arrived in Rimini for a substitute in the local high school, Daniele Dominici holds fast friendship with the rakes of the place: Dr. Malvestiti, Leo Montanari, Nello Bazzoni, Marcello, Gorgio Mosca named "Spider"  and Gerardo Pavani, the latter engaged to Vanina Abati, a student who attends a class where Dominici teaches and that seems afflicted by a melancholy without remedy.

The black hero of this parable is terminal Daniele Dominici (Alain Delon), uprooted intellectual, disillusioned and nihilistic that returns, in a sort of great pilgrimage to the places of his youth, when, scion of a noble family, he frequented aristocratic houses inhabited by decaying races. He pretends to have never been to Rimini and faces the task of substitute in humanities with disdainful detachment, without imposing the teaching and anyone interested only to "explain why a verse of Petrarch's nice." Everything else, including protests and meetings, is alien to him, bores him: the professional vocation not glosses, the political commitment inspires sarcasm ("For me, blacks and reds are all equal, blacks are more stupid," he hisses the class in an uproar), the rumors it dislikes school (expelled a student from the classroom because he alluded to an alleged Vanina passion for racing cars). He lives with his wife Monica ( a wolfish Lea Massari) but falls in love with shady Vanina (Sonia Petrova), seduced by his seemingly incurable sadness. The conflict with Gerardo (Adalberto Maria Merli), a wealthy Vanina boyfriend, is inevitable: the clash between the two of them back him Spider (Giancarlo Giannini), secretly fascinated by the feisty sprite shabby beauty of Daniele. All around a chorus of miserable people,  ready to muddy each other at the first opportunity, but close for a misplaced sense of friendship. A full-blown melodrama imbued with autobiographical resonances (the character of Daniel is the container in which dramatic Zurlini ideally pours all of himself), innervated by atmospheric notations (the ferocity of winter Adriatic as a mirror of human relationships). On this basis a schematic functional and unabashedly autobiographical, the filmmaker weaves Bologna staged highly personal and idiosyncratic, the alien is capricious experimentalism of modernity is the golden precepts of classicism: a directorial style that blends visual harshness and linear narrative, gives rise to a film unique, deeply, exquisitely "zurliniana".

Jacket :    VG+  

Light cardboard cover,in VG+ condition, with NO wear along seams and spine; corners with moderate wear, a few creases on the front and light ring wear on both sides. Flipbacks on the back shows no cut or tear and overall no wear. Please, look at my cover scan.

Vinyl :   VG+  

The vinyl has been very carefully played but both sides visually appear to have slightly exuded showing a subtle "milky haze", probably due to the contact between original plastic inner sleeve and vinyl, during the long years of storage. This visual peculiarity does not affect the quality of the sound which shows a very low background noise in low passages.

Catalogue/Label :

CBS S65403 stereo, original Italian pressing. Orange label show a few signs around the spindle hole.  

GRADING CODE

Grading is VISUAL, under a bright light. 

        NM  (Near Mint): Record has been opened, and probably played, but is in impeccable condition. I do not use "mint".

EX   (Excellent): Has signs of use or storage, but still considered top collection quality. Jackets may display some very light wear; vinyl may have a few light sleeve marks only visible in the highest light. Sound will full and clear, with little if any noise (NOTE, some records are just pressed poorly).

VG+ (Very Good Plus): Still a great copy but has a bit more wear. Vinyl may have some light scuffs or scratches, but nothing deep. Jacket may have some ringwear or seamwear. Sound should be great, with minimal if any noise.

VG  Very Good): A great play copy but clearly used. Vinyl will display many hairline scuffs or scratches, but will play with a tolerable amount of noise. Jacket may have splits and wear but will not be falling apart.

VG-(Very Good Minus): A used or worn copy, that has not been taken good care of. Vinyl will have many scuffs or scratches, but play through enjoyably despite audible background noise. Covers will have tears, splits, writing, or other issues. 

 G  Fair, Poor: A very rough copy. Will play through without skipping unless otherwise noted, although records of this grade are sold AS-IS.
