NOT an un-liscenced bootleg....this is a guaranteed first edition/pressing obtained from original band member.
About 500 copies were destroyed in the late 1980s, so there are a few left,
especially SEALED ones!
They were just one of the many unlucky ones who never got the deserved
wider exposure, the truth is that Outbreak remain arguably the most
deeply buried secret from the Canadian metal underground.
A diamond which was the first actual indication that there was something in
the water in Quebec, and that the contamination would soon take its much
bigger toll spreading way beyond the boundaries of the good old thrash...
So we arrive to this "master stroke" of galloping power/speed/thrash which
predates other similar prairie "scouts" like Liege Lord's "Burn to My
Touch", Helstar's "Distant Thunder", and especially Attacker's seminal
"Second Coming" by a few years. The title-track opens the album in a
calmer galloping fashion throwing the bridge towards the neighbours from
the South; but a minute later things have already gone into the wild (West)
with fast lashing guitars ripping the listener's skin accompanied by the
vocalist Kaizer Fist's piercing screams which may remind of early Eric
Wagner (Trouble); the Kaizer retains his dramatic high-strung exploits until
the end and one can hardly think of a more suitable delivery having in mind
the highly energetic music. "Uber Alles" is probably the most versatile
composition the impetuous gallops interrupted by a few slower sections and
a direct sweeping bashing one.
If you want to experience formidable, addictive gallops for whole 7.5-min
then your life must be graced by the gorgeous "Hell On Earth", one of the
finest songs to ever appear from Canada, a riff-fest with great melodic
deviations as well and the Kaizer's most pitchy performance who reaches
Rob Halford-esque heights effortlessly maybe sounding a bit strained on the
very high registers. "Mein K" begins in a serene meditative way and
I clearly see quite a few running to the closest yoga centre for their first yoga
class... This number again promises more variety from the get-go and indeed
the dominant gallops have been left aside for the sake of faster-paced
thrashy crescendos and a cool stomping lead-driven passage, not to mention
the macabre doomy riffs which creep out of nowhere at some stage; overall
brilliant stuff, first-rate thrash metal which the Canadian scene simply
wasn't able to provide until this album's appearance.
Well, that never happened, but the demo "Iron Guard", which came out just
a few months later, was another interesting compilation of
power/speed/thrashy anthems at least half of which were leftovers from the
"Master Stroke"'s recording sessions so it should come as no surprise the
similar ways of execution applied on both works. Alas, the guys disappeared
literally without a trace after that and never took part in Canadian metal's
golden year period condemning themselves to the one-album-wonder
"purgatory"... Nevertheless, their evil steel gallops still echo in the fans' ears
who will always have their eye on the neighbour's horse for the always
possible spasm of cowboy-esque nostalgia and the eventual outbreak of Wild
West-styled mayhem.
