Description
P. P. ARNOLD Kafunta is a very scarce 1970 South African pressing of the 1968 10-track stereo LP which includes soulful covers of the Lennon-McCartney classics Eleanor Rigby & Yesterday, the Mick Jagger-Keith Richard penned As Tears Go By, and the classic, Angel Of The Morning (arranged by Led Zeppelin’s famous bassist John Paul Jones and produced by ex-Rolling Stones manager, Andrew Loog Oldham).
P. P. Arnold was one of the Ikettes, the backing singers for the Ike and Tina Turner Revue in the 1960s, but during a visit to London, Mick Jagger, impressed by her powerful voice and stunning beauty, connected her with the Stones’ manager Andrew Loog Oldham, who signed her to his Immediate Records label.
A nice excerpt, which shows the effect this album had with South African fans, more specifically in the Cape regions:
In 1970 P. P. (Patricia Pat) Arnold released the iconic Kafunta album and 45 years later (in 2015) she came to perform in front of adoring fans in the “Kaap” and made musical magic with some intimate evenings with Kafunta and P. P. Arnold proving why the music that inspired a generation in the 1970s is still so powerful today. To understand why she left some of the audience at these intimate performances in tears, you have to understand the history of the album. Kafunta was an album that every music lover whose interest went beyond Springbok Radio’s top twenty had to have in their collection. On the Cape Flats this album holds the world record for “the most borrowed and never returned” album of all time. There are friendships that have still not been renewed after it went missing. That album cover of P.P. Arnold, sublimely regal in an African weave, was probably part of the mystique but it was really the music, that voice, that grabbed fans, transporting them back to their youth. She gave fans her love for Africa with a poignant version of Thula Sizwe and, with Glenn and Michelle Robertson, paid tribute to the late Zayn Adam with Give a Little Love. The voice, like a beautiful wine, has more than matured into a quality that adds to the memories of her early recordings.
Although I haven’t tested the vinyl on a turntable it looks to be in good condition and would grade it as per the VG+: Very Good Plus.
VG+: Very Good Plus. This record will have some light marks (light scratches and light sleeve scuffs), and it might make an occasional pop or crackle in parts, but will not even come close to overwhelming the listening experience. Still a very desirable grade. As for the jacket, it will start to show more signs of wear than a VG++ jacket, the ring wear may be slightly more evident, the edge wear or corner wear may be more defined as well.
Note: The sleeve is in fairly good condition, but does have a 50 mm split at the top fold (see all photographs).
Please note: The South African Post Office (Johannesburg International Mail Centre Hub) is experiencing a backlog on outgoing and incoming international mail, and the item may take an additional week or two longer than the estimated time of arrival. Thanks in advance for your patience : )
