Description

Rare original 1967 probably South African 45 by the Picadilly Line. “Emily Small (The Huge World Thereof)” is a psych classic. Other tune on B side is “Gone Gone Gone”, a song written by The Everly Brothers and very recently also covered by Robert Plant & Alison Krauss. Both tracks are from Picadilly Line's classic LP “The Huge World Of Emily Small”.

In the last couple of years several copies of this rare 45 have been auctioned on Ebay. On my listed copy labels and cat. number don’t match with the other auctioned copies, which all have CBS 2958 as the official cat. no.

This 45 has cat. no SSC. 863. At the labels bottom the no’s 7098 and 7099 have been printed upside down! On the original “CBS  Seven Single” sleeve a sticker has been added with a new number SS 7756, that again doesn’t match with the label no’s. On the B side a -more recent?- sticker on the label reads “SAUK” with a stamp “Cancelled” and again the SS 7756 no. The same “Cancelled” stamp has been added on the sleeve sticker.

On the A side there’s a sticker: “GRC Sample – Not for Sale”. There’s a bit of a purple stain (?) or sticker on the “Single 45 Play” logo and two black marker “X’s”. The remarkable “Single 45 Play” logo is not on the officially 1967 released copies. A long story, but I've tried to describe this 45 exactly as it is. Please see my pics.

My guess is that this is probably a deleted DJ Promo copy (from South Africa?).

The original CBS Seven Single sleeve is, apart from the mentioned stickers, in VG+ condition. Labels are, apart from the mentioned stickers and the purple stain (?) also in VG+ condition. Punch out still intact. The vinyl itself is in shiny, excellent condition.

Some more background info on this group. The Picadilly Line's “Emily Small” is one of those 45’s that just seems to have slipped under the radar of most UK pop psych collectors. As such, it has never been re-issued in any form! The band (essentially a duo led by Rod Edwards and Roger Hand, who would later record as Edwards Hand) flourished briefly in the late '60s releasing one album: “The Huge World Of Emily Small”. With them were the cream of UK session men including Danny Thompson (bass), Alan Hawkshaw (keys), Herbie Flowers (bass) and Harold McNair (flute). The Picadilly Line even managed an appearance at The Middle Earth club in London, the then hallowed centre of the UK psychedelic scene. Reference points are a psychedelic Hollies, Nirvana, Kaleidoscope (UK), World Of Oz, Donovan and The Bee Gees. Their songs are filled with beautiful dreamy vocal harmonies and elaborate electric and acoustic arrangements.
