 PINK FLOYD "SAUCERFUL OF SECRETS" (UK EMI COLUMBIA scx 6258) 1968 very nice VG++/VG++ CONDITION!The odds of "The" Pink Floyd surviving Syd Barrett's exit were quite long. When your lead singer, guitar player and song writer is the same guy, it is rather integral for them to remain in the group. Usually. However, Messrs. Waters, Wright & Mason and new guy Gilmour, were not an ordinary group of musicians.The new Roger Waters-led Pink Floyd (Barrett does pop-in to say good-bye on the final track), have made one of the best prog-rock albums that I have heard. First track, "Let There Be More Light" begins with a deep two chord guitar intro met with some light cymbal tapping and an eerie organ that sounds like an intro to a 1960's heist movie. "Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun" is a rare Floyd song - it lets Nick Mason take the spotlight. Mason's tapping swirls into Richard Wrights keyboards and Waters' ominous vocals. It sets the entire sci-fi mood of the song. A Saucerful of Secrets is tailor made for psychedelic meditations with your lava lamp and all those weird lines on your hand. It is very intense but peaceful - if that even makes sense. It is what tigers hear in their heads just before they pounce onto a gazelle at dusk."Corporal Clegg" breaks the atmosphere a bit with a bizarre kazoo driven beat that shows that Waters' favourite subject (war = bad) was already planted in his head long before The Wall. The title track is a twelve minute instrumental with total nightmare sounding noises that finishes with a peaceful chanting and soft organ, like you went through a tunnel to Hell and ended up on the golden bricks leading to the Pearly Gates.I find "Jugband Blues" very poignant when considering the song's circumstances. It was Syd Barrett's final piece of music with the band he formed. I always found lyrics like "I'm not here..and I'm wondering who could be writing this song..." to be frighteningly interesting.
