Despite the number of new Elvis Presley pressings, reissues and retrospectives that grace the Juno shelves each year, it's not often you get the pleasure of revisiting the King of Rock & Roll's original studio albums. Our role is usually reserved for the limitless supply of compilations and live records that are still being green-lit for release, bootlegged or otherwise. It's with great enthusiasm that we approach From Elvis In Memphis, then. Not least as this is a true landmark in the icon's oeuvre. First landing in 1969, anthems like 'In the Ghetto' 'Suspicious Minds', and 'Any Day Now' share honours with lesser known material, all of which reveals the big man at his most soulful and, arguably, reflective. Fitting, given this was both a major artistic comeback moment for a guy who almost got completely lost in the mayhem of mid-60s chart and movie megastardom, and a personal ode to the town he lived and was laid to rest in, less than a decade after this landed.
