An early copy pressed by EMI from April 1974. The problem with the 1st pressings from March 1973 is that, in decent condition, they can cost a small fortune. But here's the irony - the audio cut onto this copy as an A3/B3 - is practically identical to many of the 1st pressings with solid-blue labels a year earlier [only one iteration different A2/B3 vs A3/B3]. So, those in the know realise that the same fantastic audio can be obtained from a copy just 12 months later. How can we be sure of the pressing date of April 1974? Because EMI were right in the middle of removing 'Gramophone' from the perimeter text of all labels - and replacing it with 'EMI'. When they came to make this change in April 1974 - the typographers goofed up the label design [as these labels clearly demonstrate]. Note how the labels mention 'Made in Great Britain' - twice on each side. Once at 4 o'clock and then again at 6 o'clock. A pretty basic error - but very helpful when it comes to dating these copies. Later copies can still sound really good. But if you want to replicate a 1973 copy 'on a budget' - this is a great place to start. The vinyl comes housed in an original Q1 1974 cover. The opening on the left is glued shut - like the early copies forming a nice solid opening panel. We have a late seventies EMI inner sleeve and one of the posters [these are not quite at the same standard as proper 73/74 originals]. 
Vinyl (Ex/Vg+) A very nice clean and lightly used original copy. Do expect a few light marks per side - but nothing heavy or noticeable. A thorough testing from beginning to end reveals a mostly EXCELLENT level of playback with a couple of deviations. Intros and inbetweens are very nice and clean. The audio signal is clean and pure. I'm picking up very little extraneous noise in the signal from use. Remember - these early copies were not mastered with audio limiters like later copies. You're gonna get the full audio range which some record players at the time could not deal with! It plays nice and clean into those super low-key moments and absolutely belts it out with no distortion in the high dynamic areas. The only audible faults are as follows...In the 1st 20 seconds of 'Money' there's some intermittent interference. It actually sounds like someone 'repeatedly striking a match'. This 1st 20 seconds is all sound effects of till registers ringing and money being counted. So ironically, it just sounds like yet another sound effect in the mix [but clearly shouldn't be there]. Thankfully, the interference drops out of the audio quickly at the 20 second mark. Three more ticks in the opening heart beats on side 1. But a large swathe of this LP is totally unencumbered by background and playback is highly impressive.
Cover (Ex-) Often found it sub-par condition and you really need a sweet looking copy to fully get the aesthetic. Nice deep blacks front and back - with only very lightest signs of handling. The aesthetic, I'd argue, is very well preserved. No creases really. A bit of edge wear in places - but looks like some of it has been carefully inked in [a neat job]. The spine is well above average too. The interior is looking superb - no issues at all. Overall the cover retains excellent rigidity. One sweet looking copy.
