Playback ‘69 “The Underground Sound” LP


This is an audio yearbook from New Trier High School in greater Chicago. It captures a lot of the hippie, druggie zeitgeist of the time. It starts with “Introduction” which is some trippy rock music with pulsating synths and echoey vocals. Then it moves on to “Folk Festival” where a young woman sings Barry McGuire’s “Eve of Destruction”. Following that is a few teenage girls singing their druggy rendition of The 12 Days of Christmas which they title “The 12 Days of Tripmas”. In this song, each of the 12 days are detailed with which drugs they were given by their pusher, each verse ending with “...and a tab full of LSD...”. A different drug or drug paraphernalia is given each of the 12 days. It’s insane.

Then there’s a comedic section about locker searches.

The weirdness then slows down with “Christmas Concert”. Side 2 covers Athletics, the Administration gets a chance to talk about locker searches, and it ends with a skit.

Jacket is plain white with a stamp (looks like the White Album”.
