Description
NINE ORIGINAL 16" old-time radio transcription discs (16 different episodes) of "Popeye the Sailor" presented by the Wheatena Corporation. MOST, IF NOT ALL OF THESE ARE HERETOFORE "LOST" RECORDINGS of the very first Popeye series, originally broadcast on the NBC Red Network Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday nights at 7:15 sometime between September 10, 1935 and March 27, 1936. Actors include Detmar Poppen (Popeye), Olive Lamoy (Olive Oyl), Charles Lawrence (Wimpy), and Jimmy Donnelly (Matey the Newsboy). Music and sound effects courtesy of Victor Erwin and his Cartoonland Band, who were also featured in Fleischer cartoons. Instead of downing spinach, our hero gulps down bowls of the sponsor's hot cereal, Wheatena! You will only find perhaps one or two episodes from this run anywhere, usually as third or fourth (or more?) generation cassettes and CDRs. This represents a nice chunk of this series' 87 episodes (previously thought to have totaled only 78), including the final installment! Being a self-styled/amateur archivist, I hate to let these go but am getting married next month and require...um...financial assistance! (The reserve amount is a cash offer from a serious Popeye collector, who understands my mercenary approach.) CONDITION of most of these sides is only fair to good with many scratches (even scratches have scratches), but play without skipping with the help of tonearm weight adjustment; condition improves consecutively. Declicking software should help immensely. 1) Program nos. 31 & 32: condition is fair with needle digs). 2) Program nos. 32 & 33 (not a typo: one side is duped!) Condition: fair, the second side the worst of the two. Labels on each side with REBROADCAST dates of 10/25 & 10/27 (see pic). 3) Program nos. 34 & 35: fair with rebroadcast labels. 4) Program nos. 56 & 57: G/fair with moisture damage to one label; rebroadcast labels. 5) Program nos. 61 & 62: G/G- with one rebroadcast label one side. 6) Program nos. 64 & 65: G/G+; two labels. Needle scratches on program 64's label. 7) Program nos. 77 & 78: VG/VG- with rebroadcast dates (1/31/37 & 2/2/37) penciled on either side. 8) Program nos. 75 & 76: G+/G- with rebroadcast dates in pencil. 9) Program no. 87 (one-sided disc with fancy RCA "web" design on reverse): visually graded at least VG+ with rebroadcast date (2/23/37) in pencil; its original date is 3/27/36. Again, these are in need of a serious audio "facelift", but appear to be one-of-a-kind. Subjectively, the only thing separating "fair" from "poor" is skipping: I have not listened to each and every side, but the worst examples did not skip. I guarantee none of these discs have been recorded, and therefore I will not sell copies, so please do not ask. The high bidder alone will own these historic OTR episodes. I CAN NOT ACCEPT RETURNS on this lot for the very same reason; I can not risk a buyer dubbing these and then returning them. I have graded these as carefully as possible, using my 20+ years of collecting expertise: check my feedback before bidding. PAYMENT INFO: I accept personal checks but prefer money orders to guarantee speedy delivery (USPS Priority Mail within the U.S.); I hold checks up to two weeks until they clear. I will accept PayPal if the buyer agrees to terms prior to payment.
