This precious treasure is from our family extended collection. Hope someone would appreciate and it’s head over a safe home, to value the sentiment behind as it’s been under our possession for almost 40 years.
This rarity is characterized by a raw, aggressive, and energetic "salsa dura" (hard salsa) sound. It's propelled by raw trombones (two, in the classic style), off-kilter piano, and in-your-face percussion. It captured the "savage, smoggy vibe" of 1970s New York City.
The youthful nine-piece band was reportedly led by trombonist Julio Millan and pianist Tony Ortega. Their sound had a swinging descarga (jam session) feel.
This album was produced by the "audacious" Bobby Marin. It was considered a "clandestine project" and a "hidden gem" of raw, unfiltered musical brilliance.
Released on the small, independent Salsa Records, the album was a rebellion against the mainstream music industry and the big labels like Fania Records. It didn't achieve mainstream airplay but became a highly sought-after treasure among collectors worldwide for its authenticity and raw sound.
The iconic, stark, black-and-white cover photo of a snow-clad fire escape (created by Charlie Rosario) is considered a visual manifesto of the band's urban roots and the gritty soul of the city that birthed their sound.
