Description
I have collected records, CDs, etc for about 70 years and I never saw this special edition before. Quite rare I believe based on my Internet search. I found only one other, in poorer condition, for $470. A special edition put out by Norman Granz, the famous jazz impressario of the 1930s-60s. All of the descriptive information in this special edition was written by Mr. Granz in 1949, so I assume this 6-disc set was issued in 1949 or 1950. To begin with, this is a large format package, measuring about 15 x 12 1/2 x 1 inch. The heavy black cloth-covered boards have impressed gold lettering on the top board. Everything sharp and clear. Inside, all the record sleeves and photos are spiral bound with a heavy gold spiral. The 6 records have their individual heavy weight manila paper holders with overlapping tops. These are 78 rpm records so I could not play them. However, they appear pristine, no defects or dirt is visible. They are shiny as if new. This set would qualify as a museum piece, it is that good. I note the records were made by Mercury. The record categories are: The Duke Ellington Sides The Neal Hefti Sides The Lester Young Side---The Coleman Hawkins Side The Ralph Burns Side---The George Handy Side The Charlie Parker Side---The Willie Smith Side The Machito Side---The Bud Powell Side The rear section of this package has 16 beautiful photos of various artists, such as Louis Armstrong, Teddy Wilson, Oscar Pettiford, Stan Kenton. etc. Count Basie Each photo is about 12 1/2 x 12 inches. The inside top and bottom covers also each has a photo. This is a rare package for the jazz enthusiast. Fantastic. Free shipping.
