RARE 1970 advance release WHITE LABEL PROMOTIONAL... first pressing vinyl of the legendary HOLY MAGICK album by thee illustrious Graham Bond....Graham Bond was a jazz and blues musician who sang, played alto sax, Hammond organ and the Mellotron. He led one of the greatest and most innovative British R&B bands of the Sixties. The Graham Bond Organisation featured such wondrous musicians as Ginger Baker, Jack Bruce, Dick Heckstall Smith, Jon Hiseman and John McLaughlin.
In 1970 Graham was invited to join Ginger Baker’s Airforce, organised after the demise of Blind Faith. Graham Bond joined up with Airforce but when an American tour was cancelled, Ginger’s highflying band was forced to take a break. During the hiatus Graham set about recording a solo record for the Mercury label, which was going to be called ‘Reunion’ but ended up titled ‘Holy Magick.’
The hand picked musicians assembled for this album included keyboard man Victor Brox, guitarist John Moreshead and drummer Keith Bailey. At the sessions it was said that Graham drew a huge pentagram on the studio floor and insisted that all the musicians stood on their birth signs.
Bond the master magician carried out various rituals and set up an altar with two large candles perched on a vibraphone. Victor Brox obediently drank from a chalice Bond offered him and was promptly sick. The fluid it contained wasn’t wine. It was some kind of vomit inducing perfume. As the music got underway one of the candles fell over and set fire to the studio. Outside came a great clap of thunder and it began raining.
The first part of ‘Holy Magick’ consisted of a long improvised piece that related to the Qabalistic Cross, the Pentagram and the Tree Of Life. One of the 18 songs ’12 Gates To The City’ was released as a single coupled with another track ‘Water Water.’
According to ancient Druidic and Celtic legend, King Arthur will return in this age of Aquarius to sustain us. And man, he's going to blow a mean blues; according to merlin Graham Bond! Long before the recent spate of black magic involvement by some groups, Graham has been involved in white, or as he prefers to call it - holy magick. In order to help the word and perhaps gain a little more understanding he has devoted his Holy Magick album "to the true seekers of light". The lyrics are mainly incantations and chants in Egyptian and Atlean. Stonehenge is photographed on the sleeve with Graham and his wife Diane Stewart raising their arms in supplication. If you can't take the magick however, there is a lot of wailing music to enjoy. Graham sings with his usual pre-Joe Cocker intensity, and plays organ, piano and reeds. Keith Bailey is a storm on drums, and other musicians involved are Victor Brox, Big Pete Bailey, Aliki Ashman, John Gross, Alex Dmochowski, Godfrey McLean and John Morsehead. They are at their best on slow tempo blues like "The Judgement". And even if you don't want an astral temple constructed around you, playing side one, should help contact the "higher forces", according to Bond. At least we can invent a new category - Rockult!
