UK DECCA (LK 4955) 1968 ORIGINAL UK MONO MIX GATEFOLD COVER
Beggars Banquet was the last Rolling Stones album to be released in a mono mix (Let It Bleed was the last Stones LP to be released in mono in the UK, but it is a stereo fold down); it showed up that way only in England and disappeared very quickly, it is one of the rarest legitimate and official Stones album releases, and it runs circles around the stereo version.
Not only do the instruments and singing seem twice as "close," but on many songs the fundamental sound is different. "Sympathy for the Devil" pounds away with a fury that the stereo version only hints at; "No Expectations" has a layer of instrumentation that's buried in the stereo version; the electric guitar on "Parachute Woman" has a louder, crunchier feel that's muted in the stereo mix, and the song actually sounds close in spirit and texture to the slow blues numbers on albums such as Rolling Stones Now! and 12 X 5. Indeed, one gets a full sense from the mono mix of the continuity between the group's playing here and on the records that preceded Beggars Banquet. - (AMG)
The cover is in strong VG+ shape. The lamination is intact and nice everywhere except for the spine where it has dried and flaked a bit as happens from the opening and closing of the gatefold sleeve over the past 42 years. There is a very slight crease to the lower left corner of the back cover, the inner gatefold is in lovely shape. The original white inner sleeve (w/British patent # and "Made in England") has yellowed a bit from age but is still here (DECCA at this point no longer employed the RED and BLUE inner sleeve mono/stereo system that would have put a punch hole on the back cover).
The labels are unboxed red DECCA (LK 4955) 1968 with some faint spindle marks. The disc has moderate scuffs and scratches, mostly light hairline marks, and plays EX or better with some light background noise in quiet places. It has been cleaned on a VPI record cleaning machine and, like most mono LPs from the 1960s, it plays very well throughout. The mono mix was never released in the US and is a difficult LP to find in decent nick. I grade this copy a visual grade of VG+/VG cover/disc and guarantee satisfaction.
