Description
I bought this record new in 1972, taped it and have only played it a dozen or so times since then. The vinyl on both sides is clean and shiny and both sides play loud and clear, and both boxed blue"Decca" labels are clean(VG+). The cover is still in very good condition, the front has a glossy finish and the back has a dull sheen. There are no tears, stickers, or writing. There is some light ring wear at the top of the front, and some light wear to the gloss from years of storage, noticeable if held at an angle to the light. However it is still rigid and the spine is intact and can be easily read in the shelf. (VG) I have kept it in a plastic cover for most of the time that I have owned it. The album is a compilation and contains some of the Stones' most rocking tracks. They did excellent covers of Chuck Berry songs during their time at Decca, and there are five of these on this album, as well as a couple of songs that were associated with Berry through his performances of them , although not written by him. ("Route 66," written by Bobby Troupe and performed by Nat King Cole , and "Down the Road a Piece" written by Don Raye in 1940 and recorded by the Will Bradley Trio). This compilation was one of several that Decca put together after the Stones left and formed their own record company. At the time of this album's release the track "Bye, Bye Johnny" had only ever been released on the 1964 EP "The Rolling Stones", The other tracks include B sides and album tracks from the period 1963-1965 and 1969, the only hit track is "19th Nervous Breakdown" from 1966. (A double LP "More Hot Rocks"was released in the US on London later in 1972 which included "Bye, Bye Johnny" and the other three tracks from the 1964 "The Rolling Stones" EP.) This is one of the better compilations of the Stones' early period and it delivers what the title suggests: rock n' roll, from start to finish. For track listings see photos 5 & 6.
