The Rolling Stones : Their Satanic Majesties Request 1P/P1 1st Press Mono

This first mono pressing plays to a very high standard for the vast majority with only a couple of obvious signs of interference  - a handful of clicks on S1 and a 'stick' on S2.  This is unfortunate because the rest of the album plays with great clarity and definition and very little intrusion.  A full grading is given below.

The famous 3D cover is in excellent condition with only minimal wear and the original psychedelic red inner is also in great shape.

As this is a genuine first press the bell tolls three times on 'The Lantern' intro and of course has the 1P/P1 matrix.  This is a relatively early first press as it has a BA stamper on S1 and just a single stamper C on S2.

Visual grading

The piano intro on 'Sing This All Together' plays with great clarity with only a couple of barely audible dust ticks.  The opening vocal is perfect with no intrusion and it continues to play with exceptional sonic quality.  The mid instrumental cannot be faulted - each note is so sharp and precise the playback is stunning.  The final vocal is just as good and this is easily one of the finest version of this opening track that I have heard in many a year.  In essence it plays as well clearly as it would have done back in '67.  A sublime start and Mint- is an easy grade to give.

The classic 'Citadel' has only a couple of mega light ticks on the intro and the first vocal section has no 'background' at all.  There are 6 clicks at the end of the next vocal into the brief 'silent' section but from then on there is no other interference and plays with superb audio.  Just a minimal touch of light static on the fade out.  The majority is Near Mint but G- during that one brief section.

The intro on 'In Another Land' is 'as new' and the first vocal from Wyman is of the same 'high end' standard.  There is so much 'going on' with this classic track and yet the overall clarity of sound is a genuine highlight.  There is no 'muddiness' to the audio and rarely does this album play as 'cleanly' as this.  The rest plays with wonderful precision and even the 'snore' end section has only a little static.  The actual track grade as Mint-

The acoustic intro on '2000 Man' is nigh on perfect and then plays with great power and depth and...no interference.  There is maybe a hint of minor distortion on the final section but it really is minimal.  There is one light tick on the fade out so I will grade as Near Mint overall.

The quiet intro on 'Sing This All Together (See What Happens)' has only very minimal light static and as the music starts the playback is stunning.  The depth and quality of the audio is sublime and every section plays with outstanding audio.  There are no negatives not even during the 'quieter' moments.  The section leading up to and including the vocal plays with incredible clarity and no interference.  After a few seconds of near silence the final 'instrumental' plays perfectly.  I will grade the intro as Ex+ band the rest as Near Mint - perhaps it deserves higher but I prefer to be a little cautious.

The 'spoken' and piano intros on 'She's A Rainbow' plays so clearly with no interference and the opening vocal also has a clarity of sound that belies the age of the album - 55 this year!  It continues in the same precise way with no ticks, clicks or pops and no underlying static either.  The classical mid instrumental is a prime example of that.  The final vocal section plays to perfection and how often do you get audio like this on a 1P/P1 first mono pressing?  From start to finish there is no interference and Mint- is an easy grade to give.

The 'three' bell toll intro and the acoustic opening section on 'The Lantern' have only the lightest of background static and the first vocal then plays with sublime clarity.  From then on it plays with imperious quality with no sign of any interference.  This is impressive when you consider there are a number of quiet sections.  One of the finest versions I have ever heard the intro is Ex+ but the remainder has to be graded as Mint- it is that good.

'Gomper' plays to a very similar standard with barely any 'background'  The vocal section has only a handful of barely audible ticks and the 'psychedelic' section then plays with breathtaking quality.  There are a handful of mega light ticks on the fade out but obviously they are not intrusive.  I will grade as Near Mint but the vast majority is better than that, I may even be underselling it.

The long opening note on '2000 Light Years From Home' has barely any static although the intro does have two very dull and relatively quiet pop sounds.  As the music begins the playback is super clean and the only negative on the first verse is that the needle sticks at the start of the the second line.  A real shame because otherwise you cannot fault the clarity here.  Push it on very slightly and the audio is flawless with no other intrusion.  It has lost none of its original sonic quality and the quiet interlude has only a couple of light ticks.  The final vocal has no interference and the quiet instrumental ending could hardly play any better.  I will grade the intro as VG and the second line as G but the rest ranges between Near Mint and Mint

'On With The Show' has barely any 'background' on the spoken intro and from then plays with no interference.  There is perhaps a little inner groove distortion but is certainly not intrusive.  This is also a mono record being played on a stereo set up and in my opinion is still worthy of a Near Mint grade.

In summary this first mono pressing plays with great quality overall and only a little interference.  Those moments are obvious but at least they are very brief.  The rest of the album plays with stunning quality and the clarity, definition and power of the audio is very impressive indeed.  It may not have been popular with the critics and many fans when first released but in my opinion this first pressing is the hardest to find in decent condition.  It may not be visually perfect (are they ever?!) but the majority of this very collectable album does play exceptionally well.

The Gatefold & Red Inner Sleeve

This iconic 3D cover is in excellent condition with only a little shelf wear.  The top edges have hardly any rubbing and the bottom edges just a little more.  The wide spine is also very clean with only minimal wear on the corners.  The right hand corners are in pretty good shape with not too much wear and the opening edge has only minimal handling wear.  The front cover is in great order and the 3D image is still firmly attached.  There is minor wear top left but overall the laminate is very clean with only a couple of minor creases.  The back cover is in superb condition with only minor wear on the corners visible and the inside of the gatefold is as close to perfect as is possible with no writing/doodling for once!  A very strong example overall.

The original psychedelic red inner is in great condition with only one tiny side split and minimal creasing.
