RAGTIME FOR BADGERS
A change from our usual listings.
Here are some VERY EARLY Ragtime/Two-Step and similar musical items on some rare original 78s.
They were DANCE PARTY records for pre WW1 ravers,
so some are a bit scruffy. Please check description.
if you buy MORE THAN ONE RECORD we will give you a HUGE discount on POSTAGE!
Here we have Plantation Pastimes, an original Ragtime 10” 78rpm single-sided record from August 1901!
It has an ANNOUNCED START and we all love an ANNOUNCED START.
There is no artist named on the label, but the cheerful fellow announcing identifies them as “Hager’s Orchestra. Columbia Records” in other words, Fred Hager conducting a red-hot studio band on Columbia Disc Record 339.
For a record that’s 122 years old, it is in remarkably good condition. It plays very well on our top-of-the-range HMV wind-up.
IMPORTANT BIT: Because it has one of those “dimpled” surfaces found on mega-early discs, even with the bias adjustment trying its hardest to cope, our ludicrously expensive transcription deck cannot safely play the first few grooves. In fact, even tracking at approx 2.5gms it can only safely play from about one-third of the way in, to the end.
However, if you plan to play the disc acoustically, there is no problem, and it sounds amazingly good, with lots of strange whooping and honking from the band.
Let’s call it what the VJM Record Grading System describes as a V- or V.. but remember those dimples causing problems for very lightweight pickup arms.
It is as rare as heck, and has been for 122 years.
Have a look at the attached VIDEO and hear and see it played on a fairly good middle-of-the-range HMV table-top machine with a sharpish needle.
ALSO.. PLEASE NOTE.. the lucky purchaser may receive a S*U*R*P*R*I*S*E in the parcel!
NO OVERSEAS bidders please.
And NO OVERSEAS bidders using UK addresses please.
SORRY, NO BUYER COLLECT...but.. if you buy MORE THAN ONE RECORD we will give you a HUGE discount on POSTAGE!
