As usual, another wonderful set from Booker T. & the MG's. CAPTURE THE SOUL BAND OF STAX RECORDS.     Entirely beautiful soul music from beginning to end, with lots of nice touches from everyone in the band.....as usual! Listen and Believe. FAVE TRACKS: Sing A Simple Song, It's Your Thing.....ahhhh, what am I saying- THEY'RE ALL FAVE TRACKS! 11. It's Your Thing

BAR-KAYS - SOUL FINGER - The Bar-Kays were part of the next generation of Stax-Volt artists, entering a vibrant soul scene populated by the likes of Booker T. & the MG's, The Mar-Keys, Sam & Dave, William Bell, and Otis Redding. MG drummer Al Jackson, Jr. had taken the young group under his wing, gearing them up for this fantastic 1967 debut.

The blistering title track is an unquestionable Memphis soul classic, kicking off a strong set of 11 instrumental cuts. House-wrecking numbers like "Knucklehead," "You Can't Sit Down" and "House Shoes" are sure to get your party started.

Sadly, this would be the first and last record from the original Bar-Kays lineup. While on tour with Otis Redding, a tragic airplane crash took the lives of Otis and four members of the group, just six months after the release of this album.

The remaining members (trumpeter Ben Cauley and bassist James Alexander) later reformed the group, playing back-up on several Isaac Hayes records and releasing a string of albums that moved their sound towards heavier funk with vocals.

Definitely recommended for fans of '60s soul.

THE METERS STRUTTIN'S ON LIMITED EDITION COLORED VINYL PRESSED BY RHINO RECORDS JOS 4012 - The Meters' "Struttin'" (released June 1970) was their third album, and another classic for the Josie label. Recorded, like their debut, at Cosimo Matassa's New Orleans studio (the amazing second album, 1969's "Look-Ka Py Py" was made at La Fevre Studios in Atlanta the previous summer), it is both of a piece with its two predecessors and an indication of their ongoing evolution.
The quartet's seminal Josie recordings utterly revitalized their hometown's music scene - of the eleven singles issued on Josie during three prolific years, beginning with 'Sophisticated Cissy'in November 1968 and continuing until the label went bankrupt in late 1971, ten were national hits. And the city's indigenous rhythmic identity - emphasisizing a laconic sense of syncopation rooted in a century of musical history and cultural cross-pollination, was reconfigured and reinvigorated by the Meters, who posessed individual virtuosity and the collective musical telepathy that makes great bands more than the sum of their parts. After decades during which the Crescent City made its mark on the national conciousness, as jazz, r&b, soul, and rock 'n' roll records broke out of the region and climbed the national charts, The Metres emrged during a post-Motown/post-British Invasion lull, quickly established themselves as central in the evolution of soul into funk. "Sturttin'" itself has remarkable variety within a seemingly restrictive framework. On "The Meters", 'singing' was restricted to the grunt that opens the very first song. The hit 'Look-Ka Py Py' opened the second album, and offered a bit more, as the band, led by Joseph Modeliste, 'sang' variations of the title phrase (inspired by the sounds emitted by their car's engine on the trip to Atlanta) as pure rhythm

There is funk, and there is Funk. This here is of course the latter! Hey, some just got it to give...
So stacked with soulful, tasteful, delicate melodies, intricately woven to create a breathing continuum of FUNK that one just needs to play replay and replay again in order to bask in the glory of this sound. Unbelivably creative, unforced and pure, just laying it on in layers! it's amazing that the tracks are comprised of several instruments, and far from the multi-tracking that has become standard routine, because it is so full. reminds me of a musical trio (i.e. The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Cream, The Police, Stevie Ray Vaughn) where each musician - and his part - are so dynamic and could easily stand on their own, that put together the parts are sufficiently impressive and enticing so as to leave upon the listener the impression that he is listening to many more musicians playing at once. i could easily go on, but i'll stop here. This is the distinct New Orleans Crescent City Sound, which rivaled the Chicago sound, the Memphis Sound, the Philly Sound, and we are lucky to have these recordings available to us in crystal clear quality. Sounds as good now as it has ever sounded!

o.k. Let me be clear about this... not every track on this album is a winner... but most are... and the ones that are SMOKE, ridiculously.

A bit of historical background...
Bill Doggett in many ways was a fore bearer of the music that would come to evolve within the JB bag...
He was a pianist for Louis Jordan -- James Brown's idol...
Jordan inspired Doggett to make the leap to Hammond...
Doggett would hit paydirt in 1957 with a hit recording of HONKY TONK that, simply speaking, wouldn't leave the charts...
Jimmy Smith, of course would emerge that same year, however, Doggett and McGriff's grooves would dominate the juke boxes, even
later absorbing the sounds of JB himself.
At the same time, JB would dabble on Hammond, mainly for various recordings he'd do on the SMASH label.

By 1969, King records was all about Hal Neely and JB...

No doubt, having tracks produced by James Brown would definitely have helped Doggett's career -- who by then, like Ballard and many of his label mates
were becoming old "old school" as the JB generation arose.

Alas, this gem...

It consists of three types of tracks... A number of JB type heavy booty shaking funk numbers, a few throw-aways, but mostly, high energy MOD/'60s GO GO inflected juke box "shake your tail feather" type singles.
HONKY TONK POPCORN, for example, is simply a hard groove funk loop, with a bluesy rock and roll guitar wailing out over the pocket. HONKY TONK in contrast has Doggett up front.

"Side 2" is when it picks up... You have diddies like MAD -- which is not only exciting, groovy and energetic (you can imagine the go go dancers in the cages dancing the Watusi) -- is also
catchy and off center-

This LP was referred to me by a friend. What a great record!!!!! Why isn't this on the radio? I have to admit until now my favorite masters of jazz guitar were Grant Green and Wes Montgomery! Now I can add Eddie Fisher to that list! Eddie Fisher & The Next One Hundred Years is a wonderful fusion of jazz funk and classical in the mix. I really like Beautiful Things because the arrangement is off the richter! This one song starts with classical violin and gives you sort of a smooth jazz guitar groove and then it ends with the funkiest guitar licks this side of the galaxy. This LP is not of this earth. There are some really enjoyable and intriguing moments on this recording. I also like the smoker Jeremiah Pucket. With it's sassy groove and amazing wah wah guitar. This is a real kick ass record. It's easily one of the top 10 releases so far this year!!!!! Gotta find more releases by this guitar genius.

 This is one incredible record. Everything is in the soup. Jazz guitarist Eddie Fisher defies description. On the first track Jeremiah Pucket Fisher gives you what can only be described as jazz with a little acid and alot of funk. This should be all over the airwaves. Its too damn good. Land Of Our Father is more jazzy with some spicy guitar licks and some smooth hammond organ. But what makes this CD really hot is Beautiful Things. A 12 minute smoker that incorporates jazz with classical violin and wah wah guitar licks. Somebody pinch me because this is one delicious record. If you can find it I would also recommend Eddie's first Album, The Third Cup". I'd give it 6 stars. After all these years it stills sounds fresh.

CLARENCE WHEELER & THE ENFORCERS - DOIN WHAT WE WANNA - PRESSED BY RHINO RECORDS - ATLANTIC RECORDS SD 1551 - This is the album that inspired me to become a musician. My dad had me listening to this when it was first released on vinyl in 1970. I was 6 years old at the time, and I loved it, despite not knowing what genre of music it was called! Groovy version of the Beatles' "Hey Jude". "Sham Time" and "Electric Surfboard" do Eddie Harris and Jack McDuff justice. "Right On", a tune that could have made it on the soul charts back then, features vocals by Judy Clay & Cissy Houston (Whitney's mom). "Dream Bossa Nova" features the band members' soloing versality. Title track "Doin' What I Wanna", a great blues-jazz tune you can dance to. The album concludes with "C.W." the bands' signature tune, which even features a drum solo. I regret not being able to see them live before Clarence's passing in 2006, but this album is the personification of what jazz should always sound like.
