TWO MONTHS after the recording of the classic NERVOUS BREAKDOWN EP that would cement Black Flag and SST Records into the music history books, 24 year old Greg Ginn was selling electronics in the back of Ham Radio Magazine. Here's a full page ad complete with the classic SST RECORDS logo, and the design style that set the template for all of the SST catalogs that came after. A VERY RARE piece of music history, and a wonderful addition to ANY Black Flag collection.
The SST T-1 Random Wire Antenna tuner would cost $140 today, and was most likely assembled and boxed by Steve "This Ain't Van Halen" Corbin. The sales of these devices surely funded the initial SST releases. Was it heavy weed use that caused the radical shift in style of Black Flag's oeuvre in 1983? Have you ever stared at a circuit board while listening to "Your Last Affront?" Will the disastrous 2013 reunion LP "What The..." be deemed a lost classic and reissued by Light in the Attic in 2040? There's so much in life to consider.
This magazine is 45 years old and is in great shape with some light tearing on the cover staples.
The ad includes a drawing of a tuner, probably made by Raymond Pettibon. Perhaps, as they were still on speaking terms then. Can you imagine cutting up a Pettibon for the insert of Loose Nut while downing a Bonus Cup? I sure can.
