One of the finest bands signed to the Charisma label during its early-'70s heyday, they were part of the famed Charisma stable, alongside Genesis, Lindisfarne & Van Der Graaf Generator ...
Original release in 1973 by Charisma Records, "The Machine That Cried" was String Driven Thing's third LP. Based around the nucleus of vocalist/rhythm guitarist/songwriter Chris Adams, his wife Pauline Adams (vocals) and Grahame Smith (violin, later with Van Def Graaf Generator and Peter Hammill), String Driven Thing's introduction of Grahame Smith made the group's sound unique. Soon after recording this album in 1973, String Driven Thing were the opening act for the "Foxtrot" tour by Genesis, but they allegedly stole the tour after winning five encores at a show in the English Home Counties, which was regarded as inappropriate behaviour for a support act. Wonderful song writing filled with haunting lyrics and vocals lend emotion to every song -- the soaring violin compliments the guitar wonderfully. If you only ever hear one album by String Driven Thing, make sure it is this one. If you can only manage one track, it simply has to be "Heartfeeder". This is a truly inspired album, which opens with one of the finest, darkest, yet most uplifting pieces of prog you may come across. "People on the street" is one of the band's most adventurous pieces. On the face of it, it is a power ballad, but the intricate structure of the song reveals itself as it progresses through a variety of passages. The "Time shot down…" section builds especially poignantly. The title track returns to the darker aspects of "Heartfeeder", but it is the restored "River of sleep" with its dramatic, swirling violin which steals the show right to the end. The beautiful closing section is but a part of the magnificent whole.
