Condition of Cover: Still Sealed with a small sawcut Condition of Vinyl: Still Sealed (sound sample is from another open copy of the record) Paul MacNeil’s first and only album, “If It Rains” was produced in Boston for Just Sunshine label in 1974. It was well received in the folk rock community as a unique collection of the songs written by this Boston and Cambridge underground legend. He played clubs in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Florida and at the Ultimate End in Key West. He played on the same bill as the Cadillac Cowboys in Newburyport with Fred Click, and played on the same bill as John Sebastian and Tom Rush at the Grog in Newburyport. Many of his songs have been recorded by other artists: Bill Staines; The Pozo Seco Singers; Nancy Michaels; The group Orpheus, also known as the Villagers. He performed in Boston where Joan Baez and other acoustic performers got their start because there was an active folk music scene in local coffehouses in the sixties. The Loft, the Turk’s Head and the Sword in the Stone were all on Charles Street at the foot of Beacon Hill in Boston. Paul played mostly Country Western style and folk music and would occasionally try out his own tunes. Other Boston coffeehouses were the Café Yana (near Fenway) and the Club Unicorn on Boylston Street across from the Prudential building. When he played at the Unicorn at 19, he knew he’d spend my life in music. At 26 he played a folk music program at Symphony Hall in Boston, and at 28 was the opening act for George Benson at the Jazz Workshop. Not all these programs went smoothly. While playing at the Hatch Shell on the Charles River with WBCN disk jockeys for the New Writers program, his guitar accompanists were Mark Rockwood and Kenny Girard who picked that day to have an argument on stage, though all are still good friends. He was the opening act for Dave Van Ronk at Bryn Mawr in Philadelphia and twice at The Grog in Newburyport. He opened for his favorite songwriter Joni Mitchell in Boston at a club owned by Dave Wilson and was on the same bill as Tim Hardin and Eric Anderson. Paul played at the Blues Bag in Provincetown with Richie Havens and he sang a song called “Hold Me” written by his backup guitarist Kenny Girard. When the Everly Brothers played an open concert near Fenway park in 1969 Paul opened for them. He won the Broadside Best Songwriter Category in 1969 and Best Songwriter – Newburyport in 1973 & 1974. In 1967, Paul was “discovered” by Tony Orlando when he and Bill Madison were playing at the Sword in the Stone Coffeehouse, and both were signed as staff songwriters at MGM/Robbins Music. Paul also had a performing artists contract, making recordings from 1967 to 1974 but Paul was not pleased with the violin and instrumental arrangements of his songs, so a record was not released from this liaison. Paul played clubs in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Florida and at the Ultimate End in Key West. He played on the same bill as the Cadillac Cowboys in Newburyport with Fred Click, and played on the same bill as John Sebastian and Tom Rush at the Grog in Newbuuryport. Many of Paul's songs have been recorded by other artists: Bill Staines; The Pozo Seco Singers; Nancy Michaels; The group Orpheus, also known as the Villagers; and Guitarist Paul Lolax has recorded instrumental and teaching versions of Thirteenth Stairway. Paul’s first album, “If It Rains” was produced in Boston for Columbia/Epic records in 1974. It was well received in the Folk Rock community as a unique collection of the songs written by this Boston and Cambridge underground Legend. After recording many of his song legacy for Chris Biggi at Sunset Ridge Studios in New Hampshire, he was living primarily in California until 1990. Paul is now living in Cebu in the Philippines writing books and adding to his song catalog with tunes that describe life in the Philippines and Paul's adventure of travel and musicianship.
