Description

Original UK CBS rough orange label mono press.

The second album by Spirit issued in January 1969 in the UK and recorded during March to September 1968 in Los Angeles. The follow up to their first album Spirit, it included more jazz influences and the track 'I Got A Line On You' was a hit in the USA. It was the last Spirit album to be released in both mono & stereo mixes and the initial covers had stereo stickers added to them. The labels also have numerous mistakes in the titles and credits, such as crediting 'R. Californian', which have never been corrected on later re-issues. These original mono issues were dropped at the end of 1969 and later stereo re-issues used copy tapes as the master tapes were locked away by CBS in 1969. Finally, in 1996 new mixes were made by the original producer & band members from the 1968 studio multi-track tapes, but the original mixes have never been remastered.

This is the original mono issue with the very earliest A-1/B-1 matrices and A-1 A-2 stampers.

The West Brothers Printers front laminated sleeve is intact & in EX condition, with some light laminate rubbing and a couple of small creases on the front cover and light storage rubbing on the unlaminated rear. The spine is intact and fully readable, the plain inner is intact & in EX condition.

The record is in visually EX condition, with only a couple of sleeve removal hairlines and one or two light needle scuffs visible on each side. The labels are in EX condition, clean & bright with evidence of a couple of faint spindle markings on each side.

The sound reproduction is EX+, still clear & precise throughout with no loud pops, hiss or crackle & definately no skips, sticks or jumps, but there is some low background noise during the run in grooves.
Overall, just a really great, loud & lively listen.

The matrix nos. are; 63523, A-1 stamper A-1, B-1 stamper A-2. This is one of earliest copies of the first pressing of the original UK mono issue of this classic 1969 album!
