Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive, any spindle marks appear very fine and faint, and knowing the source of this album, little played reitterated by superb sound quality.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 137 grams. a very good weight for this record.

Rarity: Scarce, all the Taste albums seem quite elusive. Finding this superb album in such clean condition will seldom happen, this is a lovely clean record and plays beautifully. The cover is very soft and textured and again most of these will be tatty and ringworn – not this one.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Fronted by the legendary blues-rock guitarist Rory Gallagher (vocals, lead guitar, harmonica and alto-saxophone), this was an early Taste for this man’s genius. Rhythm was provided by John Wilson, drums and Richard McCracken, bass. Formed in Cork in 1966, this was the band’s second album and arguably their best – destined to be Ireland’s answer to Cream, a powerhouse blues-rock trio, but like Cream only to be short lived splitting up early due to wrangling. A popular and great live band, this encaptures the quality and greatness and massive potential of this brilliant trio. This copy on offer is superb with practically faultless sound and generally impressive good looks. For fans of the early Gallagher sound, this is unlikely to disappoint.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: and this hardly does this little-worn example anything like full justice. A single unlaminated format, matt finished with lovely texturing on the front and back. Printed and made by MacNeill. Fragile, delicate and wear-prone, this will seldom be found a great deal better I feel sure.

Cover Front & Back: Very clean and highly attractive barely any traces of rubbing or wear. The fine texturing is very apparent, clean and neat with no speckle. Soft card, similar to Pink Floyd’s Meddle this tolerates any heavy handedness badly, so given the facts both sides are exceptional. No grubbiness and almost as fresh and clean as manufacture day. A small few very fine surface creases and a trace of ‘waving’ which is probably natural ‘sag’ due to the lack or rigidity on a soft card and delicate cover. A notoriously difficult one that will not be beaten too easily and few will look a great deal more attractive.

Top Edge: Barely any hints or wear or rubbing, but not not quite straight with a couple of minor ‘bends’.

Bottom Edge: Light patchy surface rubbing, this edge is straighter.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, quite sharp with little wear with any thickening mild as is any waving as just seen viewed end-on. This is guaranteed untrimmed and record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, fairly straight with some light traces of compression. The ends are tapered in manufacture and all text is present with just a tiny semi-rub to part of the ‘D’ in ‘BOARDS’.

Corners: Some tip rubbing on the lighter side of moderate, fine shape or better is retained.

Cover Summary: A difficult cover and seldom seen without major issues in terms of wear, grubbiness or even damage. This is still a very fine looker and it should please many if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(-): marked down simply for age darkening and adhesive browning on the seams. The polylining fully intact and very celar as seen through very crisp and undamaged window circles. Hardly any creasing and all edges unsplit and even the top entrance is neat. This inner is date-coded 0770 (July 1970), so this copy being early and issued within the correct year.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: with most any few surface trace marks being light and faint. Just one on side two shows a little more but is not penetrating, hence has no sound. A very fine visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. A 41-year-old record that has been very modestly played and withstood the test-of-time well. Visually a super record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This splendid record plays even above it’s high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds barely even registered and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled within a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

Final Summary: As much as I like Gallagher’s ‘solo’ albums, the early Taste records are very special indeed. Even from those early days, Gallagher’s talents were at the forefront, and this quality blend of blues and rock is testament to his memory and status as one of the truly great guitarists and songwriters. This man could also play mean saxophone too and this is also featured on this record. A beautifully recorded album with such clean sound, these unworn grooves sound just impressive and will make any quality deck really sing. Any Rory Gallagher fan cannot fail to treasure this vintage recording, the only argument up for debate is which was his best recording period? – well that’s simply a matter of Taste.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. The boxes are then reinforced with at least TWO, ULTRA THICK stiffeners for maximum extra protection – these are FOUR TIMES thicker than commercial stiffeners and are custom-made for oneadayrecords. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
