Grading

Record (visually):VG/VG (has clearly visible marks on the record on both sides)

Record (play grade):EX/EX (plays great with a lovely deep, clear, warm sound that only the early issues give. There is audible crackling/short clicks on a few of the tracks and between tracks but these are not distracting. There are no jumps or skips.

Unlike a large proportion of early Beatles records, the audio reproduction of this LP is deep and clear, as this copy does not seem to have suffered the deterioration in sound quality caused by constant playing with a poor quality stylus or badly weighted arm that a lot have.

Records are play graded on the following system;

Turntable:Linn Basik, with a Linn Akito Arm, fitted with a Shure M75EJ Type 2 cartridge

Amplifier:Unison Research, Aria Unico 1

Speakers:TDL Studio 1

Sleeve:EX-

The laminate on the front cover has a number of creases, the most prominent on the bottom left hand & top right corners where the sleeve has been bent at some time. The bottom right corner is bumped/worn which has resulted in it becoming rounded, whilst both left hand corners are bumped & slightly split on the spine edge. The writing on the spine is clearly visible and beside the small splits on the ends/corners has no splits or creasing.

Rear: There is a slight ruffling to the rear cover, probably caused by getting damp at some stage. The white sections are slightly soiled , with the opening edge being most prominent. The flip-backs are secure and undamaged beyond what could be realistically expected on a 50+ year old record. There is a numbered sticker on the lower centre section. which is defiately not of the homemade variety due to the typeface, as I was not sure whether this could be something official from EMI I decided to leave it in situ, so that the purchaser could make the decision on whether to remove it.

Labels:EX/EX (wear around spindle holes)

Inner sleeve:EX (in correct EMITEX sleeve which is is uncreased, liner intact but has slight browning on edges due to age)

Other information

This is a UK 1st issue / 2nd pressing MONO copy of THE BEATLES debut LP from 1963, with the Black/Gold label.

1st UK pressings of THE BEATLES debut LP were issued with the old style Black/Gold Parlophone label, before changing (almost immediately) to the new (and more familiar) Yellow/Black label as Parlophone discarded the old design very soon after it's release date.

Due to an error by George Martin typing the running order of the tracks and incorrectly listing the publishing credit for 4 Lennon/McCartney tracks “I Saw Her Standing There”, “Misery”, “Do You Want To Know A Secret” & “There’s A Place”.to DICK JAMES music publishing rather than the correct credit to the newly formed Brian Epstein/Beatles publishing company Northern Songs Ltd. This is the list that went to the printers, from which the first incorrect batch of labels was made, for both the mono and stereo pressings.

1st issue/1st pressing: (error in credit to Dick James music publishing) The initial run were issued with the error before being noticed by Brian Epstein, who demanded this be corrected on all subsequent labels.

1st issue/2nd pressing: (error corrected on Side 1 of label only)

Publishing credits were corrected on the two tracks on Side One ("I saw her standing there" & "Misery") but not on Side Two ("Do you want to know a secret" & "There's a place") which were again credited to Dick James Music Publishing.

The 1st/1st issue is regarded as the most desirable pressing, as it is the very first issued Beatles LP, but copies of the partially corrected label are much harder to find, as the error was quickly spotted and corrected immediately with the issue of the 2nd pressing, resulting in fewer copies being pressed.

1st issue/3rd pressing: All errors in credits for music publishing were corrected, with all four tracks now correctly credited to Northern Songs Ltd.

The grading standard used is the UK Record Collector magazine gradings as described below

Mint: The record itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. The cover and any extra items such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in perfect condition. Records advertised as Sealed or Unplayed should be Mint.

Excellent: The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and/or creasing.

Very Good: The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.

All items are securely packaged in purpose made mailers, with 2 cardboard stiffners, clearly marked fragile, with the record removed from the outer sleeve (to avoid sleeve splits whilst in transit) in a brand new polythene sleeve.

Sorry, but I do not send packages to Central & South America, Romania, Bulgaria, Russia, Albania and Africa due to high fraud rates.

About Us I have been a collecting and dealing in records for nearly 30 years and the records on sale are either part of my collection that I no longer require, or have acquired over the years as part of a job lot I purchased. In addition to selling records, I also, from time to time offer for sale other interesting items (movie posters, lobby cards, magazines, books etc) I come across in my search for records and have some knowledge about (movie & music memorabilia, collectable books & magazines etc). I have been buying and selling on Ebay since July 2000, and have a 100% positive feedback rate. I pride myself on giving accurate gradings & descriptions and doing everything I can to ensure that every sale goes smoothly. I believe that collectable items are only worth what someone is willing to pay for them, so all my auctions have a realistic starting price in relation to their rarity and/or condition. Terms Payment must be received within 5 days or I reserve the right to cancel the auction and relist. If there will be an unavoidable delay in sending payment , please advise me to avoid the sale being cancelled.  526 (GS 6.6.6 (526))
