THE BEATLES
"YESTERDAY AND TODAY"
*** *** *** *** *** *** *** ***
THE INFAMOUS 'BUTCHER COVER' here was WITHDRAWN as soon as reviewers raised issue with the daring and very risqué artwork.
The humourous intentions were clear enough by the lads' cheeky grins, wearing butcher's working coat overalls while covered by various meat cuts and...... doll effigies of babies!
WHAT were they THINKING??
Yes it's bizarre, even if you get the joke - poor taste? Macabre even? Just weird, as none of the songs seem to relate. Charles Manson was to add a terrible poignancy to this.
The US management realised the sensitivity though, so this was hastily pulled from general sale and a new picture made (a costly exercise that has been quoted to be around $100,000 all told!)
For convenience, the replacement slicks were pasted (or glued) over a few of the offending matted ones, and quickly hit the shelves in that new format.
Finding an uncovered un-retouched original is extremely difficult, so a decent peeled paste-over like this, is the goal!
Here is a fine example then - it's actually my second ever example of this, and really I had intended to keep it, but I am relenting (at the moment).
--------------------------------------------------------
I grade the cover VG++, it would look beautiful framed too! The title on the spine nicely visible.
The face is matt paper with the photo like it's on sack-cloth. There's a shallow cut-line probably done during the peel, in lifting the paste-over 're-issue' slick, and just a slight rub to the top right corner, which seems to be where most have (usually much more!) damage. Only the 'i' in "SING" is affected, and the '3' of the catalogue number is faded.
There *may* have been a light repair just there, but if there was it's so good I cannot really be certain. Perhaps the grey has a subtle touch-up, but the 'i' could have been easily repaired and wasn't. That's up to the buyer, but it is a minute detail here.
The rear sleeve is decent (see photos).
The disc is beautiful TOP SHINE NEAR MINT condition, great player and top shine, and with nice clean NM lables.
**You will notice that the LETTER OF WITHDRAWAL from Capitol Records is also featured in this particular copy. I think the company had to send it to all distributors, as pulling the lp cover was a late decision due to shock & furor from the reviewers. I understand that The Beatles liked the humourous intention of the photograph - it was actually so bizarre that few others could figure out a joke here. Later, things were to turn decidedly macabre on reflection, due to Charles Manson's murderous activities, and associations he hinted at with 'Helter-skelter Skelter' on the 'white album'. The history that surrounded the fab four was purely from the great music, such as this record contains!
The nice original ORANGE ADVERTISING inner is included too, it's complete as released in 1966!
This is genuine and rare, a highly prized collectible.
