Not much of a fan of live albums to begin with, I approached The Doors: Absolutely Live with trepidation. But that fear was unfounded. This is a powerful and moody concert recording, capturing the energy and intensity of the band at the height of their powers. When I picked this up, I wasn't really looking for live versions of the well known Doors hits; instead, I was more interested in the material that never made it onto any of the band's studio LPs.

The fact that this live document isn't merely a hits package is a plus, since there are already plenty of those in existence. This album is essential to any Doors music collection as it contains songs unavailable elsewhere. Most important here is the complete Celebration of the Lizard cycle, of which we only hear When The Music's Over on the studio release. Morrison's mad writings finally come to life, burping and burbling over his band mates' complementary psychedelia.

Impassioned performances of songs like When The Music's Over, Not To Touch The Earth (its psychotic keyboards injecting even further madness into the proceedings), and Soul Kitchen make the disc well worth the price of admission. The album might not be the best entry point to The Doors' work, but it is definitely a must for fans of the Lizard King and Company.

(a)      WE GRADE THE VINYL AS NEAR MINT. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)      The records are pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)       The records come in their original (black) Elektra stock inner sleeves.

(d)      Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-      Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 1 (front side) and 2 (back side); Inside gatefold has some light ring wear as well

-      Minor shelf wear noted on the seams (nothing significant)

-      Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the bottom seam  (nothing significant)
