Description

Serious Jam devotees will probably know the story here.

THE JAM: IN THE CITY. Original UK ALBUM. Very First Pressing. Band Signed Labels For Industry Only. 1977

Prior to it's actual release in 1977 Paul, Bruce and Rick sat down and personally signed the actual labels on the first batch of their first album and had them mailed out to influential rock press reviewers. Not something The Clash or Pistols might have done but the Jam, if just as tough, were always obliging.

This is one of those very, very early copies and formerly the property of Danny Baker - in 1977 writer at the main London Punk fanzine Sniffin Glue. A letter of authenticity will accompany the album.

The album itself is in wonderful gleaming condition, literally without scratch, scuff or blemish. The run-off stampers on this are naturally enough A/1 B/1.

The cover has a little wear at the edges and minor age on the spine but nothing serious.

However it is the label that really should concern us here. That is where the history truly lies.

These must be among the earliest band signatures there are - and, lets face it, it is highly unlikely they will ever all sit down and do them again!

As they penned their names on this selected limited edition of their first LP The Jam must have known they were right at the start of a terrific earth-shaking adventure. At that time of course all mates together and happy to do whatever it takes - even if it means sitting on the floor autographing records for the launch.

This record with it's clear bold signatures is not one of those dubiously gathered after the event artefacts. These are not hurried, grabbed - and certainly not faked - fan scribbles. This is not simply memorabilia.

The band chose to sign these early pressings themselves. They wanted to make this lot of records special. They were proud of their work and wanted to put their actual written names on it to let other influential kindred spirits see what it meant.

This is a truly authentic first copy of In The City in every way - physically endorsed and sent out into the world by the Paul Weller, Bruce Foxton and Rick Buckler themselves, thirty one years ago.
