It was 1949. I was a senior in high school, a pretty good tenor man, and a real jazz snob. I dug Diz, Bird, the big bands, and, especially Jazz at the Philharmonic.
In the late '40's, Norman Granz produced a series of albums he called Jazz at the Philharmonic. These were live concerts featuring the best jazz players of that era. They spontaneously improvised with such skill they transformed complex emotions into beautiful sounds. Their technical skills were amazing!
In 1949, Granz announced that he had produced the ultimate jazz album. He called it “The Jazz Scene” and featured the best players improvising at the top of their game. The new album would include stories about the musicians and photographs.
He announced he would only make 5000 of these albums and each one would be numbered and personally autographed by Norman Granz.
I had to have it!
The album arrived and I was blown away by the music! I was equally impressed with the photography. The album included 32 12”x12” black and white photographs with a dramatic edgy realism consistent with avant guard music in the album.Some of the artists were Duke Ellington, Harry Carney, Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins, Charlie Parker, Willie Smith, and Bud Powell.
In 1957, my company moved me and my albums to Denver, then to Philadelphia, and finally to Connecticut. I didn't play any of the “Jazz Scene” records for over 50 years.
Now I'm getting ready to move to California and have been giving away hundreds of albums. When I ran across The Jazz Scene, I opened it for the first time since the mid 1950's. I got the same rush I had experienced so many years ago.
This precious piece of jazz history should be in the hands of a real collector, someone who would appreciate it for its unique value. signed,WRM

The album consists of 12 tracks of various styles, from great mainstream sessions such as Lester Young Trio and Willie Smith Quintet; Duke Ellington's small combo session with strings; Neal Hefti's huge orchestra with Charlie Parker's alto sax overdubbed; Coleman Hawkins's magnificent tenor solo; Machito's latin ensemble; Charlie Parker's awesome quartet session; Bud Powell Trio's yet another fine performance; to avant-garde/abstract big-band by Ralph Burns, George Handy...
What makes this album so special (as well as superb quality of every performance) is the well-manufactured cloth-bound album itself, and 30 great b/w photographs by Gjon Mili, plus 2 others. This album itself surely represents what the Jazz scene was like in the 1940s, from Norman Granz' own perspective.
