THE MODERN LOVERS 1978 Beserkley JBZ0050 Jonathan Richman Proto-Punk EX

The self-titled debut from The Modern Lovers is one of the founding documents of proto-punk. Recorded in 1972 by a band of teenagers from the Boston suburbs, it sat unreleased for four years before Beserkley put it out in 1976 — and it was still ahead of its time. Jonathan Richman's songs are raw, two-chord, Velvet Underground-worshipping declarations: "Roadrunner," "Pablo Picasso," "She Cracked," "Astral Plane." The album appeared on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list and has never left the conversation.

The band that recorded this was remarkable on paper and in practice. Jerry Harrison went on to Talking Heads. David Robinson became the drummer for The Cars. John Cale — Lou Reed's former bandmate in the Velvet Underground — produced six of the nine tracks here. The Sex Pistols covered "Roadrunner." That is the pedigree of this record.

This is the 1978 US pressing on Beserkley Records (JBZ-0050), pressed by GRT. Black label with gold "Beserkley" script and yellow text, "Home of the Hits" tagline. Mastered by G. Horn.
