Label/Format: Immediate – early second press pink format with matt smooth surfaces. These actually more ‘pink’ than my pictures probably show.

Label Conditions: Two beautiful clean and fresh examples with only a very small few quite fine and light spindle marks with very modest visibility. To be heard anything like it’s best, only lesser played copies really hit-the-mark, and this one appears very little played and truly offers stunning sound throughout.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 132 grams. A very good solid weight and this copy is very well pressed with top sound throughout.

Rarity: This has always been a highly challenging album to find in anything like top conditions. Firstly the cover: clearly very fragile with multiple small hinge folds that seldom remain strong or solidly intact. Many seen torn, split or repaired with tape – often the cover actually in pieces. This copy has NO such issues – all folds are VERY strong and FULLY intact with NO repairs. Even the most perilous one at the nine o’clock position is nigh-on perfect. This being the one that really takes the most stress, usage and weight, it being the spine area and holding the majority of this cover together, hence the vulnerable. All are intact with barely any hints of weakening. I have taken pictures of all the folds to show the fact. The record is delicate, it has moments of quietness, especially side two. So copies that have been overplayed or abused on vintage record players are of little use for the more discerning collector. Again, this record is really impressive, and these pink label Immediate record are still very early. Finding them very little played is just as hard as the pale lilac first issues – in terms of attractiveness, the pink wins hands-down as well. My play-grade was a revelation, the sound totally blew me away. For collectors wishing to hear this pop-psych classic in wonderful stereo, this will take some beating. Such copies are rare, make no mistake.

Brief Artist & Album Info: One of the iconic classic albums from the late 1960s. Along with The Who, one of the most famous ‘mod’ bands of all time – ‘Ogden’s’ took The Small Faces into the flower-power scene that embraced 1967, ‘the Summer of Love’, but they did not sacrifice their identity and retained their distinctive sound and perspective. A good time ‘conceptual’ album that carries a high sense of tongue-in-cheek fun, Marriott’s cockney vocals rarely sounded better especially on the classic single ‘Lazy Sunday’. Eccentric comedian, Stanley Unwin narrates the concept suite ‘Happiness Stan’ that occupies side two. Never falling into ‘novelty tag’ due to the brilliance of all the songs, this album is a pure joy from start to finish. A strong selling album, reaching the top spot in the UK but a lowly 159 in the US – maybe a little to eccentric for their market at this time. Including an innovative multi-fold out cover this classic album received rave reviews on issue and is still great fun to listen to today. A masterful swan-song for this band, it could have hardly ended on a higher note and this fantastic, fully intact copy does it high justice with fantastic clean sound and wonderful stereo imagery the psych albums really benefit from.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): this is a real beauty, and I came as close to grading Mint(–) as I would ever consider for this incredibly fragile cover. I have described the format above and my pictures should ‘describe’ it better than loads of words. It was printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd. The back has the UK Patent Application No of 21639/68 and Design Application No 936818. I would think my pictures speak for themselves – certainly a contender for the most fragile and unforgiving cover of the 1960s, a better example will never prove easy to find (and that is something of an understatement).

Cover – The Ten Faces: All the eight illustrated faces are in superb condition, all are seen in my pictures and these should speak for themselves. Deep rich colour is retained by all including the more vulnerable front and back ‘covers’. Clean, fresh and practically no wear or grubbiness traces at all, a cover little used or handled and the lack of creasing to single thickness card is a huge plus. The two non-graphic faces are equally clean with minimal traces of any set-off from facing sheets, that is somewhat unusual. These fragile sections will prove immensely difficult to find better.

Cover – The Hinges: All hinge folds are very solid with minimal hints of stressing, no splits and certainly NO tape or repairs. This is quite possibly my very best Ogden’s cover yet, even the hinge fold surfaces retain their ink with barely any hint of rubbing. When these areas are overused or abused, the cover segments can twist and loose definition which has simply failed to happen on this very well preserved example.

Cover – The Rims: Any thickening or burring to the circle ends (or rims) are very few and mainly light, any only really seen viewed end-on. The main spot being just to the right of the 6 o’clock position which clearly means the storage area, but even this is minimal and there is little else of note. Finding one of these with all circles razor sharp will prove near impossible and most would be happy to look half this sharp. All circles are neat and generally crisp, especially seen normally full-on. There are no tears or damages.

Cover Summary: Put simply: this cover looks fantastic. With so many seen in tatters, rubbed, grubby, creased and aged, this is an example on the other side of the cover spectrum. It remains unusally strong and fully intact, fresh and clean, and certainly attractive. Not one to be opened and closed often, such fragile pieces always carry a risk of damage and when so intact, best left that way. This excellent example could indeed prove a major upgrade for many and most collectors will enjoy owning this one.

The Inner: This copy came to me with a circular paper unlined inner as well as a very soft transparent one. The paper one has aged a little with a few tiny marks and mild darkening. Some crinkle on the back flipback side bottom, both window circles are crisp and neat.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT / EXCELLENT(++): an impressive visual copy that is very clean with lovely fresh shine and very solidly pressed. Under bright angled light, light surface marks are seen on side one, these being very fine and whispy, very few at all on two. No penetrating scratches at all, the whispy blemishes probably from dry-cloth ‘cleaning’ and totally harmless. Viewed in normal daylight conditions, little is seen as all and the record looks exceptional. Given the age and album type – this was popular – a lovely early example that will please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This impressive vintage record plays even above its high visual grading with hardly anything to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. A superb stereophonic record which always benefits the more psychedelic albums that rely on channel separation for affect. Any surface sounds minimal with hardly anything noted, even on the spoken word parts of side two. A hugely challenging album, but this was a joy to play-grade. Few available copies will match or outperform this top pressing significantly I feel sure. These type of albums were simply played into submission, even trashed, when they look and sound this good, you have somethinig really special and the importance of this classic record cannot be denied. Both channels are clean and sharp with no pressing or tracking issues*. I feel very sure this record has been played only lightly and has been well stored. Anything less for the cover especially, would mean something very different to what’s on offer here. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. The minor surface blemishes are ignored and finding this better will never prove easy. I also remind I play all my records on one of the world’s most revealing turntables, the Linn LP12 Sondek – this a major factor for all my play-grades. This copy will prove very difficult indeed to find significantly better and it should also please many, if not most collectors. Remember: “Life is just a bowl of All-bran, you wake up every morning and its there” – well you won’t wake up to a copy of this album looking and sounding quite like this everyday, that is for certain.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
