Welcome to 20th Century collectables.
This is the ultimate Pepper collectable; an ultra-rare Sgt Pepper wide spine STEREO from 1967 with the highly desirable 1G stamper code. Of all the millions of Pepper albums that have been produced this was one of the very first!
These thick wide spine covers were the very first Pepper sleeves to be made and were originally designed to accommodate an array of cardboard souvenirs which the Beatles had wanted to place into the gatefold sleeve. As production budgets escalated EMI decided to cut costs and plans to include these souvenirs were shelved. In the end only the green cardboard cut-out souvenir was included and production switched to the narrower spine well ahead of the June 1967 release date. These wide spine covers have some of the earliest pressed records in them.
It is difficult to determine how many wide spine covers were produced but they were certainly produced in comparatively small numbers. Stereo wide spine covers are even rarer than their mono counterparts and it is believed that stereo production started ahead of the mono production; it therefore follows that this record is was one of the very first Sgt Pepper records ever produced! Labels: EXCELLENT +
A great set of labels with only faint spindle traces around the centre hole.
Visual: EXCELLENT
When viewed under a strong halogen light there are whispy sleeve removal marks visible and evidence of very light handling however the record appears virtually mint when viewed in strong daylight. The heavy duty vinyl lies 100% flat on the turntable.
Audio: EXCELLENT
There is some surface noise evident on certain tracks but the record plays without any significant deterioration to the sound quality. The bass frequency throughout is clear and undamaged. There are 3 faint ticks at the beginning of ‘Within You Without You’. The record does not jump or stick.
Cover
EXCELLENT
A great example of this ultra-rare stereo cover. There are some light thumbnails visible to the front and back with some light wear to the corners. It still retains its high gloss laminate finish and the gatefold still ‘crackles’ as new when opened. The spine is uncrushed with only minimal signs of storage wear and ageing.
