Description
This is Rutherford Chang's extension of his headline-making 2013 NYC art installation, in which he set up a mock record store which only carried 1st pressings of the Beatle's White Album - over 800 of them. He created this LP by playing back 100 uniquely worn copies at the same time, allowing them to drift out of sync and organically transform from recognizable tunes into static and bursts of noise. The cover and labels were created by compositing the images of 100 different copies together. A large poster is included with the image of each individual copy.
The LP received a very short pressing run and was offered for sale only for a short while, before being taken down due to what I can only presume were massive legal threats. It is unconfirmed how many of the records actually got out into the hands of customers. This is unavailable and extremely limited and is widely recognized to be pop culture's most discussed and controversial art piece of the year. This will only go up in value as sealed copies are opened and become scarcer and scarcer.
A bit of misinformation is being spread that the pressing was limited to 800 pieces - this is incorrect. 800 copies refers to the number of original white albums that Chang collected. The pressing is most likely much more limited than 800 pieces. Much fewer are actually out there in people's hands, that is for certain.
