Original very early 1st US pressing of The Chantel’s debut album “We Are The Chantels” released on End Records in October, 1958. The repackaged new design cover of the withdrawn issue with the “Southern Plantation” cover. The 2nd version cover of this album is conventionally called the “Jukebox” cover. The laminated front cover depicts two teenagers standing at the Seeburg 220S of 1958. Along with the photo of the band members, the original title of the album was also gone and replaced with simply “The Chantels”. In spite of this copy having been repackaged in a cover of the new design, it’s practically impossible to find it, and here is why. Almost all of the vinyl that comes with this cover are the repressings of 1959~1962. The vinyl of the currently listed copy contains the “11/14/58” date stamp in the runout groove of Side 2 and was pressed within one month since the release date of the album in October, 1958. We’ve never seen this date stamp even on the vinyl that came with the withdrawn “Plantation” cover. The vinyl of this copy is one of the earliest pressings of “We Are The Chantels” album that we’ve ever seen. 1st print 2nd version Super High Fidelity laminated front cover remains in the original factory shrink wrap and still contains a retail price sticker. The 1st pressing catalog number LP-301 is located on the front and back cover, as well as the spine. The back cover contains the “END Records 1650 Broadway, N.Y.C., N.Y.” address at the bottom. Original 1st print 2.75” deep groove pressing ring two-part doggie End Records logo “LP-301” catalog number label variation without the record company credit. Very early 1st pressing with the “11/14/58” date stamp on Side 2 contains the first -A-1 / -B-1 matrix numbers and -A / -A mother stampers in the runout grooves. The full matrix numbers are as follows: Side 1 - END LP N-3001-A-1 A; Side 2 - 11/14/58 END LP N-3001-B-1 N-3001B-1 A. The album comes with the original The Chantels "Maybe" / "I Can't Take It" jukebox "All Time Hits" record label and includes the original white End Records die-cut inner sleeve. Incredibly rare highly collectible LP in beautiful condition of one of the most outstanding Doo-Wop girl bands ever.
★
The magnificent cover remaining in its original factory shrink wrap is graded as Near Mint Minus. I grade the vinyl as Strong Very Good. It retains its factory gloss but has some light surface marks and hairlines as well as scuffs from the original inner sleeve which is in Near Mint Minus condition and doesn't have any splits or tears. The labels are very clean and in Excellent Minus condition only having a few very light spindle marks and scuffs, the majority of which can be seen only under a strong light source. The original jukebox record label is in excellent vintage condition. In spite of the vinyl being Strong Very Good visually it sounds amazing and I grade its sound as Excellent Minus as it only has some very light occasional static which most likely will go away if the record is professionally cleaned using a VPI cleaning machine.
