The Wall of Sound (also called the Spector Sound)[2][3] is a music production formula developed by record producer Phil Spector at Gold Star Studios during the 1960s. The intent was to create a dense aesthetic that came across well on AM radio and jukeboxes popular in the era. Working with engineers Stan Ross and Larry Levine and session musician conglomerate the Wrecking Crew, Spector typified his sound by having a number of electric and acoustic instrumentalists perform the same parts in unison, adding musical arrangements for large groups of musicians up to the size of orchestras, then recording the sound using an echo chamber.

For a long time, the British Phil Spector International series was the only way you could pick up his classic early '60s productions. The Crystals volume covers all of the essential bases: the monster hits, worthy obscurities like "Please Hurt Me" and "No One Ever Tells You," and the controversial, withdrawn Goffin-King single, "He Hit Me." It's been superseded as the collection of choice by the 1992 ABKCO CD, The Best Of The Crystals. As this import collection is out-of-print and difficult to find, all those looking for a definitive Crystals anthology should go for the ABKCO one instead. But if you already have this vinyl LP, it essentially duplicates the contents of the CD; audiophiles may differ on the matter, but I wouldn't say it's worth the $15 or so to "upgrade."

The Crystals are an American vocal group based in New York, considered one of the defining acts of the girl group era in the first half of the 1960s. Their 1961–1964 chart hits, including "There's No Other (Like My Baby)", "Uptown", "He's Sure the Boy I Love", "He's a Rebel", "Da Doo Ron Ron (When He Walked Me Home)" and "Then He Kissed Me", featured three successive female lead singers, and were all produced by Phil Spector. The latter three songs were originally ranked #267,[1] #114, and #493, respectively, on Rolling Stonemagazine's list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.[2] However, two songs were dropped from the magazine's 2010 update
