Description

The Desert Sessions Vol. I & Vol. II is the first full-length album by Palm Desert, CA "supergroup" The Desert Sessions. This rare record was pressed on light blue vinyl. The record was purchased brand new and has never been played. It came in a taped polysleeve when I bought it from a reputable record store in Minneapolis. I'm the only previous owner and have not played it. Everything is in NM+ condition and looks new. If you like Queens of the Stone Age... I can't recommend this enough!
The Desert Sessions are a rotating musical collective founded by Josh Homme (QOTSA, Kyuss) in 1997. Artists such as Brant Bjork, PJ Harvey, Twiggy Ramirez, Dave Catching, Nick Oliveri, Mark Lanegan, John McBain, Ben Shepherd, Josh Freese, Chris Goss, Alain Johannes, Troy Van Leeuwen, Dean Ween, Les Claypool and many others from the Palm Desert scene have contributed as songwriters and musicians. The Desert Sessions began in August 1997 at the Rancho De La Luna in Joshua Tree when Josh Homme brought together musicians from the bands Monster Magnet, Goatsnake, earthlings?, and Kyuss. The ranch, located in the Mojave Desert, has an old house filled with rare and unique recording equipment and instruments, and was owned by Dave Catching and the late Fred Drake. With the large numbers of musicians arriving to the ranch over time, and with many albums having been produced there, the setting has been described as creating a unique "desert sound" comparable to the grunge rock of Seattle in the early 1990s and the acid rock of San Francisco in the 1960s. Many tracks from the corresponding Desert Sessions recording sessions went on to be released as Queens of the Stone Age songs as well on subsequent albums.
This album is a reissue compilation that includes their first two EPs: Volume I. Instrumental Driving Music for Felons was an EP released in November 1997. Volume II. Status: Ships Commander Butchered was an EP released in February 1998. This record features the ten tracks found on the original 10-inch EPs. The album differs from subsequent collaborative Desert Sessions in that it was recorded solely by Josh Homme's band The Acquitted Felons. This desert rock supergroup consisted of the following members:
Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age, Kyuss): vocals, guitar, keyboards, bass, percussion John McBain (Monster Magnet, Hater, Wellwater Conspiracy): guitar, keyboards Fred Drake (earthlings?): guitar, drums, keyboards, percussion Dave Catching (earthlings?, Eagles of Death Metal): guitar, bass, synthesizer, percussion Ben Shepherd (Soundgarden, Hater): bass, guitar Brant Bjork (Kyuss, Fu Manchu, Mondo Generator, Vista Chino, Brant Bjork & the Bros): drums, bass, percussion Alfredo Hernández (Kyuss, Queens of the Stone Age, Brant Bjork & the Bros, Yawning Man): drums, percussion Pete Stahl (Scream, Wool, Goatsnake): vocals
