You are bidding on an original copy of Norman Granz's 1949 THE JAZZ SCENE. In 1949 Granz self-financed 5000 of these hard back record collections and sold them for $25.00 each. In todays dollars that would be equal to $250.00. The set includes 6 12" 78 RPM records and 30 wonderful photos of jazz singers featured in the collection. All of the photography was done by Gjon Mili with the following exception: Ralph Burns was photographed by Harold Trudeau, and Bud Powell and Max Roach were photographed by Paul Nodler. The objectivce was to create a snapshot of the most important jazz being written and played in the late 1940's. Project included composers Duke Ellington, Billy Strayhorn, Ralph Burns, Neal Hefti, instrumentalists Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins, Charlie Parker, Bud Powell, Nat Cole, Willie "the Lion " Smith. Recordings began sporadically in 1946, the final product was released in 1949 on clef records. The Jazz Scene is a high quality, limited edition folio of 5000, all numbered and signed of 6 12 78 rpm by Norman Granz. This particular set is numbered 3881 and signed by Granz. Mercury records produced the set.
Each record includes a profile written by Granz and a photograph of the featured artist or artists by the French photographer, Gjon Mili who worked for Life Magazine. Sixteen additional album sized photos of other prominent jazz musicians are included as well as some artwork by David Stone Martin.
This set was a part of the estate of John Doyle. The records appear to be in good playing condition. I do not have a record player to try them out so I can't tell you anything about the sound quality. The pictures are in good condition. The original owner did write his name and address in the front.
