Description
For sale , extremely rare 7 inch record by The Sheffields, 'It Must Be Love/ Say Girl'.
I have play tested this record and it plays very well indeed with just minor crackles during the run in and run out grooves. The record does not jump and there is no interference to be heard on either side. Extremely unusual to get a record of this age in such good condition!
The Sheffields were, surprisingly enough, a band from Sheffield. The members were John E. Alexander (Singer, Harmonica and Organ), Don Allison and Brian Cooke (Guitars), Dave Fawcett (Bass Guitar) and Richard Smith (Drums).
As, The Vampires, they won a band competition at a Sheffield Pop Concert held on 16 September 1963 run by Peter Stringfellow. One of the judges was the famous songwriter Tony Hatch and it was he who took them under his wing and renamed them The Sheffields. They went on to make 3 records for Pye with Tony Hatch as producer. 'It Must Be Love /Say Girl' was their first record and had the distinction of utilising a young session musician by the name of Jimmy Page, in a session held on 31st January 1964.
The Band were immortalised in some poster art by Tony Wright that was used for the cover of a double album (see photos) dedicated to the early British R&B boom, "The Beat Merchants, British Beat Groups, 1963-1964". The poster showed the inside of a music shop of the era. On the wall between the two young men, there is a poster featuring an advert for a gig headlined by 'The Sheffields". I don't think the young guy on the left with his foot on the amp is really Mick Jagger, is he? The Sheffields had one track on the album, called "I Got My Mojo Working".
This is a great opportunity to purchase a very rare, early 1960's R&B record.
