The experience of buying records on Ebay is ruined if, when they arrive, you discover that they are either not in the condition stated or have been damaged in the post! For this reason I describe all my items in detail, and only post using strong sturdy packaging in a 'box' mailer with the record outside the sleeve to avoid seam-splitting. They are also from a non-smoking and pet-free home.

The Smiths - USA Debut LP 3-Track Promo Sampler 12" - 1984

This auction is for a fairly unusual Smiths collectable in the form of a 1984 US 'Sampler' 12" which was issued to radio stations to promote The Smiths' debut album. It has three tracks, these being 'What Difference Does It Make?', 'This Charming Man' and 'Reel Around The Fountain'. What is interesting about this promotional 12" is that it was sent out in a custom-made sleeve which is terrifically understated but nonetheless unique to this release; this was rare for The Smiths' promotional 12"s in the US, particularly the early 'sampler' 12"s which were usually issued simply in a plain white die-cut outer sleeve. This also has the distinction of being the first promotional 12" for The Smiths to be released in the US. The font and 'This Charming Man' colour scheme used for the sleeve make it instantly recognisable as a Smiths release and identify it with this early period in The Smiths' back catalogue. Its role as a significant piece of US Smiths collectable history was recognised by Record Collector in 2005 when it was placed in The Smiths Top 100 Rarities list, and its rarity is reflected in its appearance far less often for sale than many of the items which were listed above it at the time. This one has been preserved immaculately (see below) and it would be difficult, after almost 30 years, to find one which has survived in much better condition.The vinyl and labels are in near mint condition, with only the very occasional light 'hairline' surface mark on the highly-glossy vinyl if it is held to the light; the record appears to have been played once or twice at most. The outer sleeve is also in near mint condition, with no significant signs of wear at all. There is no writing, no tears and no creases; the edges are all sharp with no signs of splitting and there is barely even any wear to the corners. The plain reverse of the sleeve is, remarkably, also without marks. The only discernable sign of wear at all is the faintest impression towards the top of the sleeve due to the record having been inside the sleeve, which is very hard to see, as the record has been stored outside of the sleeve for most of its life, and one mild 'corner bump' in the lower left corner.
