I'm delighted to be able to bring this very special record to auction on the 50th anniversary of its release. 2020 is a significant year for Thin Lizzy fans everywhere with an extensive boxset and documentary film due for release; but it all started back in 1970 at Trend Studios, Baggot street, Dublin. The story behind this elusive single has gone down in Rock music folklore and it has become a holy grail for record collectors around the world. Legend has it that 500 copies were pressed and only 283 sold (this number is subject to debate) with the remainder being destroyed. Plans to release the single in the UK were abandoned, and "The Farmer" fell into obscurity to such an extent that for many years fans assumed that "New Day" -1971- (which did come out in the UK) was their debut single. An article from Record Collector magazine in 1997 could only account for 5 known copies of the single in the hands of collectors. Copies of "The Farmer" hardly ever turn up on the market and those in good condition are scarcer still. That is what makes this particular copy so special as I will describe. The labels are clean on both sides without any writing, tears or stickers but with some evidence of spindle marks. When viewing the vinyl under a strong light, there are a lot of little hairlines on both sides with one very light (inaudible) scratch on the A side. The B side has three very short scratches, two of them are light and one is a bit deeper and partially audible at the start of the track. The real test for any record is the playing and this one sounds dynamic with only a minimum of surface noise. There are absolutely no skips, jumps or loud ticks. The 45 comes in the original Parlophone company sleeve which is missing part of one of its corners (see photos), a replacement sleeve could easily be sourced. The record is graded as Very Good (referring to Record Collector's grading system). I have made a recording of both sides of the single which can be accessed at the link below: (If you copy and paste the link to your address bar it should take you to the recording).
